Recommendations for Backup Software

Yes
I'm looking for a backup software that allows me to select certain folders and to create a back up of that and then monitor those folders, the next time it is run, for any changes and then back these up.

I don't mind paying but would prefer a free solution. I'm not bothered about a system backup, just a data backup.

THanks

I'd be interested in any replies to this. I've been using synctoy up until installing Windows 7, but it just doesn't work on some folder pairings.

If you're running Vista or XP then synctoy will probably fulfil your requirements, and its free.

I use Yadis for backing up my essentials, very easy to set up and, backs up real time, tried a few others aswell but, this is the best for me.
Not sure if it works with W7 though.

UPDATE....New version does work with Windows 7.

If you're prepared to tinker there's a free tool from microsoft called 'Robocopy' which is operated from the command line or with batch files. There's also a 'Robocopy GUI' which makes it a little easier to use.

Another thumbs up for 'allway sync'

Robocopy for me, it's included in the microsoft resource kit, use it a lot at work to mirror folders .

Once you've sussed the commands to use, I could help there, it's simple to create a batch file then use Scheduled Tasks to run it at prescribed times, therefore removing the human ' oh b*gger' I forgot syndrome :)

I love SyncToy, works great for me on Win7 X64

I use Synctoy - main storage is on one external HDD and sync'ed to another every time I add or change anything.

You can schedule Synctoy to run from the task scheduler. To save typing all the steps, I copied the relevant bit from an articleon the pchell.com website (full article here).

Open Task Scheduler and Schedule SyncToy to Run Daily

1) Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scheduled Tasks to open up Task Scheduler

2) Click on Add Scheduled Task, Click on Next

3) Scroll down and click on the SyncToy option, click on Next

4) Under "Perform this Task" choose Daily and click Next

5) Now choose a start time, I would recommend either a time when you first turn on your computer or late in the evening when you are done for the day. Choose Daily again for when to perform this task and choose the current date then click Next.

6) Here's the tricky part, in order for the task to be scheduled, you'll need to tell the scheduler which user to perform the task for and the username for that profile. Enter the username and password for this profile in this section and click Next.

7) On the next screen check the box for "Open advanced properties for this task when I click Finish" and then click Finish

8) When the Advanced Properties box opens, look under the Task tab for the Run line. It should look similar to the one below.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft\SyncToy\SyncToy.exe"

Make the Run command look like the following to allow SyncToy to run all the folder pairs.

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft\SyncToy\SyncToy.exe" -R

9) Click Ok and close the Scheduled Tasks window.

Congratulations! You have now setup your computer to backup important information like your email, favorites, address book and My Documents directory to your removable or external backup device on a daily basis using Microsoft SyncToy.

I had 3 folder pairs - all worked perfectly under Vista x64, but one folder pair under Win 7 x64 just kept hanging. I think it's a limitation on folder depth, burnt half a day trying to fix it and admitted defeat. The official synctoy forum is littered with similar problems. As its not an officially supported product it might be a long time before it gets fixed.

Switched to Allway Sync now. Doing the job fine.

limitation on folder depth what do you mean by that? :s

Where you end up with My Docs\Pictures\2010\Jan................landscapes\scenery\pictures\pic2234234234.jpg

i.e. lots of directorys stacked below each other and a very long file path. Somewhere on my travels to fix it, I found something saying the max depth was 140 characters. By that point I was pulling my hair out, didn't really want to spend any more time especially if it meant reorganising my files.

It's still quite possible I had some other fault with it. But we'll blame my OCD induced file system for now :p

Right, yeah I see what your saying now. What software do you use instead?

I'm just using Windows 7's built-in backup tool these days, onto an external HDD. Works great :)

Call me old fashioned but i do it manually (cut/copy and paste) onto external hard drives

What happens when you have changed 50 pictures in 32 different folders? I would go insane. Hence using a program which just makes the changes.

I've been using the free version of SyncBack for a few years and it's been great.

I'm now happily running Allway Sync.

It's a very fine bit of software. Not flashy but it just works.

Make sure that whatever you backup isn't kept in the same place as your computer. Otherwise, a fire or a burglar would wipe out both.

Ideally, leave a backup in another building.

That's good advice. Personally my backup is onsite, but my backup backup isn't ;)
