I'm looking to get my first lighting equipment. I need it to shoot food and the occasional head and shoulders portait. I want to get a nice, soft natural light look. I'm keeping it simple so thinking of a large continuous softbox and some white foam board as a reflector.

Can anyone suggest a good, cheap light that's good value for money? Any particular brands, size, power? Ideally I'd like to be able to control the power but I have a feeling that this is only available on more expensive lights? I'm in the UK.

What camera are you shooting with? (as that will have a bearing on flash recommendation unless always using it off camera)

Had you considered a shoot through umbrella?
I have found that casts less shadows when shooting food and a more representative colour match as well

Hi Glenn. I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel. I'm quite sure that I'd like to have off camera though, so that I can learn to light well by seeing the light.

I did have a look at umbrellas. I heard that softboxes produce a softer light. Why do umbrellas produce less shadows than a softbox?

I'm considering picking up a new lens too, 50 1.4 or 60 2.8. Any recommendation?
