Sorry if this has been done to death (I couldn't see anything on the first 3 pages)

We've been moved house for over a month now and due to sky screwing things up, still have no land line or broad band connection.

My immediate reaction is to just get a BT line reconnected then find a broadband supplier but voice of reason (hubby) is trawling the sites looking for the best deal.

Does anyone have any recommendations or horror stories to share. The Post Office look like they're doing a good deal but we've had a bad experience with their insurance in the past so are a bit wary. Sky is out because of our current experience and BT look quite expensive.
We're not bothered about the whole TV package, just the phone calls, broadband and possibly some webspace.

I'm currently using a 3G mobile connection and we're in a really bad area for reception so sorry if I don't reply asap. So sick, takes ages to download photos. I haven't tried to upload anything in over a month and it keeps loosing the connection. :(

Avoid 24Talk my neighbours had the phone with them and just got BB as well. They are in their eighties and not up with technology so they got me to install it and get it working. I consider myself pretty clued up but it took 3 hours and two phone calls to 24Talk (to some guy who obviously had better things to do) to get it working because the info supplied was badly written and plain wrong, followed by a visit by a BT engineer because it ballsed up their phone as well.

Anybody but Talk Talk I would suggest :)

I use Sky as they work out cheapest and the actual speed has very little to do with the company you go with as they are wall based on BT's local loop anyway. If you have Sky TV then getting their phone and broadband works out much cheaper.

Tough one, you will find people who like TalkTalk and just as many who hate them, same goes for BT, Virgin and any other provider...

I have to say that BT tend to be good, and better than most. At least if there is a problem they can sort it if its line or BB, whereas Virgin and the like will always try to blame BT line first and you spend time messing around.

Virgin if you can. They are the only company that can garantee you get the speed you pay for. None of this 'up to 16 Meg'. If you pay for 20 you get 20.

Thanks all.
That's a good start.

No problems with Talk Talk but only with them because they took over Tiscali.
Had a nightmare with Talk Talk years ago and thought about changing when they took over from Tiscali, but so far no problems so will keep with them for the time being!

Got no choice where I live, whichever company I use the download speed is only 1.76 meg bits at best and usually only 1.42. Fibre optics hasn't been laid and can't get any better
speed from any company. Its about time these companies got together and started upgrading the network of fibre optic cables to outlying areas. Strangely enough they laid these new cables to within half a mile of us and then gave up.

So with BT, and the annoying thing is we still have to pay through the nose for a very very poor service
