Having used the Virgin Media Hub for years of cable broadband I am out of touch with router/modems for standard telephone lines.
What would be the best wireless (with ports) router/modem available for use on a TalkTalk line - by best meaning, reliable and fast wireless connection.

Talk Talk usually send you a router free, give them a wee call as they updated them fairly recently.

Talk talk routers are pants, they have given me 4! One worked. Get Asus every time, bridge it to the talk talk one and you should be fine

It won't be a fibre broadband, just whatever 'bog-standard' TalkTalk is ... will the Asus be okay with that?

My rt-n66u bridges with the talk talk just fine on bog standard adsl

You'll need both boxes plugged in and use the TalkTalk box solely for the Internet connection (turn off the wireless on the TalkTalk box. Looks like Mad Badger may be the person to help you out if you have problems.

You can get ADSL version DSL-N66U. No idea what it is like though, but it doesn't use external aerials so I'm not sure how that will affect wireless performance ....

Wot Arad said, turn off wireless on the talk talk, connect it to the new router, switch the talk talk to bridge and input your passwords into the new router, works well for me, the wireless range of the Asus, the dual band feature and all the other bells and whistles make it well worth the money, got mine off amazon
