Recommend security software plz

As title says I'm looking to put some software on my laptop I've used avast in the past but was told to change to Comodo since then laptop takes ages to open and close down so would you say go back to avast or would you recommend anything else .
Ps needs to be free
 
I've been using AVG or Avast (both have free and subscription versions) on a desktop and two laptops for quite a few years. No problems at all, but I'm not any sort of expert. Others will probably offer better advice!
 
Why were you told to move away from avast?
 
Just using built-in Windows Defender here
 
I'm not recommending it, just stating what I use (Security Essentials aka Windows Defender)
 
I've used Comodo internet security for about a year now with no problems.
 
Only in Windows 7, it is AV in the built-in Windows 8 and above offering. Fair enough it may not be as comprehensive as other offerings, but it is anti-virus.

Microsoft in their infinite wisdom dont exactly make things clear of the differences between the OS's when it comes to products of the same name!

I build computers and use avast free... ;)
 
Avast paid user here, excellent software.
