Hi there,

Over the weekend I had the chance to play around with a canon eos 350d and absolutly loved it so now im looking to purchase a camera for myself, if anyone could recommend me a good SLR for a newbie which isnt too expensive that would be great.

Thanks

The 350D is a great camera, it was my first.

How much are you looking to spend?

 for Sony.

Hi there, most im going to spend is roughly £380 at most mabey?

Have a look in the "for sales" there are some cheap cameras there.

Goto Jessops and have a play with all the brands, see what feels right.

One thing about Sonys, they are amazing value for money! I think you can pick up the A230 with kit lens for £250 incl Cashback!

Pentax K10d around £280 fleabay?

A good used 350D would be well within your budget and some cash for an additional lens. The 350D is capable of some cracking shots, I won a wildlife comp with a shot from my 350D. These are some examples of what you can get from it.

My first dSLR was a 350D, cracking little camera and I learnt the basics well from it. You wont be upset with it. With your budget you could get a 400D as well though, slightly better than the 350D

I am biased with Canon, im sure someone could point you to the Nikon versions too

Just been watching loads of 400D's on ebay as I will have a 400D with lens's to sell in the next few days as I have upgraded so been looking to get ideas on what prices they go for.

Have a look and watch, you will get a feel for a good bargain with a few hours.

Artyman, which lens did you use on your Canon 350D for the chaffinch pic.I`ve just bought a 400D and would love to get some pics like that.

My first DSLR was a 350D too - sold it just last week. Great camera :)

If you can stretch to a Canon 450D (now £452 on Amazon with 18-55 lens) I think that's the best all round entry-level value.

It's significanly better than the 350D in just about every way, whereas more recent and more expensive models don't actually deliver that much more in real terms. IMHO anyway.

I just bought a 400D after a lot of consideration.

The thing I realised was that whilst the camera costs so much, the lenses that you need to buy cost the same amount or sometimes more.

I've bought a 400D with no lens, as my friends told me that the kit lens wasn't really worth bothering with and that the first thing I'd want to do is replace it with a better lens (that said I've read posts on here that say it's ok).

My planned purchases for lenses are: 50mm (for portrait and close work) as it's about the only sub £100 lens going. Then probably the 55-250 as it's got good reviews and can be got for under £200 (maybe quite a bit under?)

So you can see that whilst you might spend a few hundred on a camera the kit you buy after is as important and expensive.

Finally it's a known fact that Canon and Nikon share 80% of the market (I read that on Lensesforhire's website)

^^^ Nowt wrong with that

But try and get yourself an 18-55 IS kit lens - it really isn't bad at all. The one to avoid is the non-IS version, which was sold with the 400D originally. The new one is completely redesigned and has IS.

If your photography is anything like most people's, you will need the 35mm and below range a lot, and there is nothing to touch it for the money. You can pick them up for well under £100 in the For Sale section. Anything else will cost you double or probably more.

There's no denying a DSLR outfit is expensive. Photography can easily become a money pit if you like nice new toys as much as taking pictures. The camera is undoubedly the cheapest part

The 350D is a cracking camera and i found it produced some of my best photos. You should be able to find it on sites like ebay.
