Yes
I've been thinking of an iPad/tablet etc but as things change, it seems that an ultraportable laptop would be the better option for me now.

Can anyone suggest one please? I've been looking at the Alienware M11x but I don't need the gaming power. However, it seems pretty powerful and should last the distance.

Budget up to £800 or so but could stretch a little if necessary I think.

I need lots of storage space (c500GB), 4GB or more of RAM and an i3/i5 processor.

Battery life will be an issue - I will likely be away from a power source for long periods of time.

Thanks for any help.

is it going to be used for editing?

if battery life is an issue avoid alienware. a better choice would be dell latitudes, start from 14" LED upwards, i3 to i7 processors etc..

Thanks Neil.

Yes, it will be used for LightRoom; maybe PSElements.

I really want to try to keep it light - a laptop and camera gear get heavy when in a backpack.

Would an i7 not get much too hot in such a small form factor laptop?

If you prioritise portability and battery over the storage space, then I'd recommend an 11" Macbook air.

You won't get the 500Gb HD but maybe an external drive would work? Mine runs LR no problem and the SSD really seems to make up for the slightly slower processor. Its great for carrying around, and I can get 5-6hrs from the battery

Lenovo X series, 12" i3/i5/i7 laptops. They're on the expensive side but weigh about 1.1KG. You can opt for the 9 cell battery instead of the 6 cell for longer run times.

They have a 10% off sale at the moment.

8 hrs battery life, 4 GB RAM, 640GB HD, i3 processor, 11" 1366 x 768 screen weighing 1.4 Kg @ £499?

You are pretty much looking at this:

If you can cope with slightly less oophm in the processing department, I've just picked up a Dell M101 (K325) for £365 with 4GB RAM (8 GB max), 320 HD and it's a superb bit of kit.

Remember, once the basics are sorted, Lightroom is more about the amount of RAM that you have than the CPU power (in relative terms).

Some great suggestions there thanks; will check them out.

Thanks very much!

In the end I went with the Asus U36JC and it's pretty impressive - lightweight and powerful at the same time while it has great battery life. Very pleased overall.

I was wondering about the asus eee slate, large powerful tablet its expensive though and im not sure how it compares for editing.

You can get little solar rechargers for powering up laptops, camera batteries etc

I've just got an x220 - superb. Light and as fast as you want to spec it. It will also run for as long as you want depending on what batteries you choose - up to 23 hours with the optional sheet battery fitted. There's a matt IPS screen option too. Highly recommend, although you might struggle to hit £800.

Hope this helps,

I fan of Fujitsu. I got few years ago smallest U series. U2010. Well it is crazy small, and early Atom processor was crap. Check Singapore Fujitsu website. Fujitsu not selling notebooks in Europe, and Fujitsu-Siemens it is not the same. You can't read Japanese, so use Singapore site in English.
You may look for U series - Ultra portables 5.6" screen at 1280x800 touchable, etc. Windows 7. Very long battery. But i believe it slow for windowses, i use it with Linux/Ubuntu. Cute, wow! But slow for processing images. Long battery live up to 5 hours, enough for windows 7 to install all its updates, defragment disk, check regestry.... windows is very funny on 1gb memory.
You may look for P series (Portable). Bigger 11-12", it has some processor power. So more likely solution for you.
You can also consider T series. It has rotateable touch screen as U series, but have fire power as P series. I never use touch screen (don't wonna get scratches)

My next small notebook will be P or T series. But for picture processing i use custom build gaming notebook: i7 quad, some crazy Nvidia GTX 285, SSD drive, 1980x1080 screen, etc :)
