So I got a new smartphone at the weekend. The camera seems pretty decent as these things go, at least on the hardware level. But the UI is unbelievably bad. Apparently the designers thought it would be best to put ALL the controls and options on one big menu. So doing something simple like turning the flash on or off, or boosting the exposure by a stop, become really tedious.

Coming from a DSLR background, what I want is a camera app which provides easy access to the most useful controls. I know I could go and Google for tech reviews, but there's no guarantee that they're actually written by photographers. So I thought I'd ask here. Can anyone recommend an app for me?

I liked Vignette when I had an Android phone - been six months or so since I used it so can't remember if it meets all your criteria, but certainly worth a look.

For simply processing photos, take a look at Snapseed..

Yeah, Snapseed is good for editing.

For actually taking photos, I use Camera Zoom FX - gives you a good level of control; exposure +/-, shutter speed, WB, flash etc and preview of filters in a fairly obvious location.

Camera zoom fx too here

What smartphone though? And snapseed is great but resizes your images for speed of processing

Thanks. It looks like it emphasises processing ratehr than taking photos, but I'll check it out.

Thanks very much. This looks more like the kind of thing I'm after.

Any others out there?
