Recommend Me A Wide Angle For Canon

I have to decide between the Tokina 12-24, the Tokina 11-16 and the Canon 10-22, but to be honest, the canon would push me into financial difficulty a little.

Currently I have a 80-400
28-135
100mm macro
70-200 L f4

I have no idea what to next get other than a wide angle of sorts. I will have about 450 to play around with.
 
Tokina 11-16 then.

It's had brilliant reviews and provided your not going to abuse it then it will be fine.

The sigma 10-20mm is more rugged but it's not as sharp and isn't f2.8.
 
Seems like the 12-24 fits better with your current lenses. 16-28 is a big gap to leave.
 
hmm, decisions decisions.
My alternative is to get a second body in case this one fails or somesuch? Either way I will have another 300 or so end of next month so not sure what to do... Tokina is supposed to suffer pretty bad CA.
 
Also considering the 17-40mm f4 L lens... I could then sell off my 28-135 as I have the 70-200 f4 L. and could just get a 50mm for in between.
 
^ That is what I'd g for - 17-40, 50 & 70-200 then a macro too would be pretty much my ideal set up (I'm halfway there).

Why don't you see if there is anyone round your way with any of the lenses you can have a chat to/play with their lens to see how you get on? If you were up my way you'd be more than welcome to try my 17-40...
 
I personally have fallen in love with my canon 24mm f2.8 lens. I use this for landscapes and all that, for when i want to get a wide shot. Only costed me about a tun on the bay. plus £15 for a hood which is coming in the post now.

Wide angle though, a canon 10-22mm costs less than the £450 you have, and i personally think it's a great lens, my friend has that lens, and i borrow it now and then. The build quality is very good, and it's a nice lens to work with.

And if you can't afford something, wait a little longer before buying.

Depends on how wide you want to go. The Canon 17-40mm is an excellent landscape lens from what I understand, especially on a FF camera. As I have a 1.6x crop camera, I went with the Canon 10-22mm as I like the extra width you get (equiv 16-35mm on FF).

The advantage though like you said though is that the 17-40mm could be used as a walkaround, and you could get the nifty fifty to fill the gap, all for a reasonable price.

Alternatively, you could save up for a Canon 17-55mm F2.8 IS which is one of the best all round lenses IMO. Good for landscapes, portraits and low light stuff too. I got my 17-55mm for about £600 incl hood and P&P from Kerso.
 
17mm on crop body isn't wide enough for landscape in my opinion - its certainly no good for in town/city building work either. Sigma 10-20 a bit of a bargain for crop sensor users, Canon 10-22mm is better IQ apparently but at 40% more cost.
 
Must cast another vote for the EF-S 10-22, excellent piece of glass

Sold mine though as it was sitting in my kitbag and wasn't making me money when it came out twice a year or so...

Still a FANTASTIC lens...:thumbs:
 
Depends on what body - obviously. The EF-s 10-22 is brilliant on my 40D, but then that's a 1.6 crop...
 
Also, the 17-40 is a f/4 which is academic, really, until you have been spoiled with f/2.8 lenses:shrug:...

Have a long and hard thinking session about future body purchases NOW...

This will save you some expensive lessons in future:thumbs:

Have to say that if you were considering using it as a "walkabout" as well, the fact that it's f4 is a big downside.

On a crop body such as the 40D the Sigma 10-20 is a good fit, and if you can afford the additional money, the Canon is said to be better, but I'm not sure if it's 40% better..

Would be on the 40D but I plan on getting the 5D or a 1DS model in the future.
Would the tokina 11-16 not go on that? I have not yet researched if it is only suitable for cropped dslrs
 
AFAIK the only full frame lens that's also a real wide on the crop format is the Sigma 12-24mm. It's supposed to be quite good but it's around 150 more than the 10-20mm.
 
And worth every penny! Specially if there's a poosibility of moving up to a FF body in the future - or even investing a few (and for the extra angle it's a VERY few) quid in a film body. Yes, it's more expensive than the 10-20 but IMO it's a better lens.

Oh, and if anyone tells you it vignettes on a digital body, tell them to remove the whole bucket, not just the clip in cap!!!

I was going to say go for the EFS10-22 as it is pretty damned good... but then you said about full frame bodies... so no EFS for you!

Tokina 11-16 is not suitable for FF... "Mount availability: Canon and Nikon APS-C", which could be EFS mount or even if is EF then it still won't work.

Probably the Canon 17-40 is your best bet then, but on your current APS-C camera this won't be very wide.

There is no real answer to buying a wide angle that works on crop bodies and also full frame because of the crop vs FF issue. Not so much of a problem on non-wide angle lenses, but a sticky issue here.

Buy the EFS10-22 and then flog it on when you go FF is the best bet - you don't loose much on decent Canon glass to be honest.

You've only had your camera two weeks anyway!!!
 
Buy what you need now. You won't lose much money on decent lenses.
