Recommend me a strobe light compatible with a YN 622C radio trigger

Hi.

i am in the process of sorting out my own studio. I have most of the necesary equipment now such as backdrops and light modifiers but i am now after something more powerful then a speedlite that i currently use.

I am after a actual Strobe light that can be triggered using a YN 622C radio trigger i use.

I need it to have fast recycle times faster then my speedlight and of course offer much more powerful light as well.

I will either use it on a unbrella or on a new softbox i will get later.

Budget is around £300

£400 if the extra 100 really is worth the extra cost.

I saw something like this on calumet:

Mains. Got speedlites for on location shoots. Dont think there is a good strobe on my budget range that does both?
 
Look at Lencarta, or for a little more money Elinchrom.

There are plenty of other good brands about, but none beats those two for performance, features, value, service etc.

Yes, fine.

For only slightly more money, my favourite Elinchrom head is the BXR-250, for the more durable build quality and faster flash durations. At ISO100, 400Ws will give you close to f/22 in a typical softbox at 1m, and you can turn it down to f/5.6 - a difference of four stops (or five stops range as manufacturers prefer to claim). That's more power than you need for most things and I think 200Ws-ish is about optimum for home portraits ranging from solo head & shoulders to small groups. Remember that upping the ISO one stop effectively doubles the power output.

For extra heads, consider D-Lites Ones where you don't need much power. Very small and light (perfect on a boom), high spec, fast durations, cheap :thumbs:

I mainly use Lencarta Profold softboxes. Great value, well designed and made, easy to put up/down, can be feathered and gridded easily, with interchangeable mounts for most brands of head. Also look at Bessel.

do these heads come with the softbox mounts? Or do i need to get them separately depending on the softbox i use?

Can it be mounted on any light stand or do i need an adapter or specific lightstand to mount it on? Reason i ask is because i already have various ligtht stands i use for my speedlites.

Studio heads come with a mount to attach modifiers, and also a slot for an umbrella shaft. The most popular modifier fitting is called S-type (or Bowens) and the other common one is Elinchrom EL, also used by Interfit, Calumet and a few others. Most softboxes etc come with a specific mount fitted, but there are quite a few with user-interchangeable mounts that can be specified at purchase.

All heads and lighting stands use the industry standard 5/8in spigot.
 
Each company uses different mounts, the speed rings (a ring with holes for the light modifier rods) allow the use of different adapters so you can own just 1 set of modifiers and with the right adapters stick them onto different flash heads. In other words, for general use once you have the right adapters you should be able to choose whatever light modifier you please.
