Afternoon all....

I have another trip to NYC in a month, and don't fancy lugging the DSLR around with me this year. Last time I took 3,000+ photos in 3 weeks between NYC, Vegas & Arizona. And TBH, I know I'll never get quality photos like some of the members on here.

This trip, I shall be focusing on video. I have stocked up on MicroSD cards and Batteries (6 in total) for my GoPro Hero 4 Black. So what I was thinking was to take a point and shoot. One capable of decent photos, whilst also having a decent video option (1080 minimum). I'd like a Canon G7X, but it's out of my price range really.

So, what would you take?

Oh, and FWIW, I also have a Samsung Galaxy S6, which will take decent photos (snapshots) and is able to video 4K. (with that in mind, is a point & shoot really worth it?)

Hmmm given how point and shoots are often replaced wit the phone.. I'd suggest a quality small Bridge perhaps? Depending on budget, there are a few available - were you intending to go for the new "big sensor" style styles ones? I know they're more expensive, and if not, the Panasonic FZ200 (small bridge) is a fantastic option.. I have been very pleased with the quality of pictures. Wildlife is my thing, and although tricky for pictures in flight, very fast and good quality results.

TBH, I've not looked at Bridge cameras. As you say, a POS will often be replaced with a phone

Or maybe I will take the DSLR, but not have it out all the time - certainly can't/won't record any video on it as it only does 720 (Canon EOS 1100D)

What's your budget, can you afford a used G7x?

I have the money for a G7x, but really don't want to go above 250ish..... Would also like a Phantom 4 lol

As with everything, it's trying to justify the cost

I would look at a Sony a6000 which I have owned and can highly recommend.

I picked up a mint used one for £275.

Hhhhmmmmm..... Never purchased used electronics before... I have this "thing" about buying new. Not sure why

Always a gamble from eBay, but plenty of camera stores sell second hand with good returns policies, and have warranties.

That being said I bought mine from eBay.

Canon G9X - touch screen makes this a doddle to use and great IQ. And smaller than an RX100. And much better than a phone in every way.
