Yes
Somewhere relatively cheap, can drive my car too via Eurostar with lots of history, culture and photogenic people and sights but without the tourists.

I did think about going to Israel, but not sure I'd fancy the drive there. Any ideas?

really cheap? you're pushing it there lol :D

Well, ok not cheap given the strength of the Euro lol. Hence why driving is going to work out cheaper instead of renting a car.

Slovenia and Zagreb are two locations someone on another forum has suggested to me.

Gibraltar? Plenty to shoot I think, not the nicest place on Earth, not sure how touristy it's likely to be either. It's drivable, but it'd be one hell of a road trip. You also visit the most southern point of Europe

Or Berlin. Again, quite a drive, but it's an amazing city.

Berlin is a great city. I went 14 years ago so it'd be nice to see how much it's changed or otherwise.

Estonia, then nip across to see Tomas in Helsinki.

We had a week driving around Bavaria last summer and it's a stunning area. Salzburg is also just over the border as well. The scenery around there is truly, truly breathtaking. Munich is a really nice city as well. We only managed one full day around the city and a half day in Dachau before heading out to Berchtesgaden, Salzburg and Fussen. There were so many other things we wanted to see but the weather was quite bad when we went unfortunately. We're about 90% certain to be going back sometime soon, hopefully this summer.

I'd add another vote for Berlin as well.

Thanks for the suggestions so far :) Taking this all in. Will need to do some serious research during my lunch break tomorrow.

Gernmany's getting expensive again due to the exchange rate hammering the *****e out of the pound - Croatia would be my frst instinct - cheap, beautiful and tons of history..
anywhere on the dalmatian coast would be good - Brac Island is a dream...

Berlin is getting right back into being the European Capital of fun, with Hamburg running a close second as the sleazy capital of fun...Reeperbahn is now very touristy so you're unlikely to get stabbed by Sct Pauli Fans out for a rumble like in the bad old days...the hookers are outrageously expensive, but still good for a laugh...to go to Hamburg and 'not' would be a waste of a life, believe me...

If you're into military history (and I think you are) then try doing some of the Battlefield Tours off your own bat...I just did the whole Market-Garden route from Joe's Bridge (the start-line for Horrock's XXX Corps) all the way to the garden at Oosterbeeck where all the Paras were temporarily interred after the battle...still owned by the same family as portrayed in the movie 'A Bridge too Far'...

After that I did the 'Easy' Company Tour from Normandy to Berchtesgaten, taking in Carentan, Bastogne, the Bois Jaques woods overlooking Foy and Hagenau...

Next I'll be doing Seelow Heights and the retreat into Berlin...

Walking those fields really makes you think how lucky we are...

Thanks for the suggestions sir. I'll consider them carefully. I'm ideally looking for somewhere that I can go with my wife and have it be fun and educational at the same time, so that sounds about right.

I'm also considering Marseille as well as Zagreb.

Marseilles is an 'effin' dump...steer well clear... Frejus down the coast is nicer but pricier...most of that part of the coast is spectacular in spring if it's dry...(think: scenery from the movie 'Ronin'...)...

Bordeaux is very good - nice food, good wine and inland is the Cognac region, where you can tour the famous distilleries like Martell and Hennesy and get kahuna'd on the cheap...

Il de Re - West coast of France.

Stunning island, basically a huge nature reserve. Have all sorts of budgets there. Eating out can be a bit pricey, but it is worth it!!

Bamburg Germany,Budapest Hungary,Krakow Poland...(Out of stag party season)....Cluj Napoca, capitol of Trannsylvania, Romania....The countryside, not the city....Florence Italy, Cadiz Spain.....few there to keep you googling.....:)

Cheers! We've decided on Italy this year. Southern parts.

Thanks for all the tips, they'll come in handy for next years and the year after.... :)

if you go to Reggio Calabria thats were im from and i can guarantee you will love it, the south of italy is awesome fun, warm and the best food ever :D

Sounds good to me.

For later years the Czech Republic isn't too bad if you avoid Prague. In the North you have Pravčická Gate which is stunning and the rest of the mountains, then in the south you have places like Ceske Budejovice, Cesky Krumlov, plus scattered all around the country there are castles and stuff :) there's a lot more to the country than Prague which is a shame as that's the only place a lot of tourists go.

Why has no one mentioned Paris? Ok, on first glance, it's not cheap but you can make it cheap! Stay on someone's couch for starters.

You've obviously never had my beans on toast!

If I had your beans on toast no one would want me kipping on their couch :D

All the places you mention involve lots of driving. I take it either you or the missus suffer from Pteromerhanophobia

Why go further than Prague? Some wonderful places on the way such as Aachen, Luxembourg, Koln, Heidleberg, Dinant, Brussels, Brugges.....

/edit. as already mentioned. Avoid Marseilles. There's never a good enough reason to go there. Nice is nice :D

Canvey Island - No. 10 on the Times good day out guide.

Cheap - Tick
Can drive car to - Tick (Although it may not still be there to drive back again).
Lots of history - Norman, Dutch, Modern (1953) - Tick
Culture - Tricky, but there is a certain something (just not sure whether you could be charitable enough to label it culture)
Photogenic people - Tick (Wide range of post millenium classes milling around, especially at weekends)
Sights - Opportunities for most sights, although the bare knuckle boxing may be a little underground and hard to find initially
without the tourists - biggest tick of all !!!

:D

can thoroughly recommend the Amalfi coast in italy. Lovely villages, its near pompei, naples, capri, volcano vesuvius.

We rented an apartment in Praiano for about 600e for a week - private covered lemon grove patio - doors from bedroom opened to this and amazing views over the sea.

food is SOOOOO cheap - 1L of becks beer was 1.5€ in the supermarket :)

Let me know if you want the website address - can dig it out.

We're starting to plan seriously now, thanks for all the hints and tips. I'm sure others will find this thread useful too.

Cheers folks!
