So my Logitech Darkfield appears to be dying. Last time this happened (they seem to last 5 years or so) I just bought another one. This time I nearly choked on my tea when I saw the price of them.....

Here's what I need
  1. Really comfortable to use. I can spend 8 hours using a mouse.
  2. Works with OS X (i.e. all the bits I specify below work with OS X)
  3. Back button - preferably under my thumb.
  4. One other programmable button somewhere near my thumb - I set this to Apple-W and really can't live without this.
  5. More buttons are (probably) better
  6. Scroll wheel - I think that's standard :)
  7. Some sort of acceleration - with Logitechs if I move it faster it moves further if that makes sense. This is kind of important with 3 screens.
Other than that I'm more or less open to suggestions. I've used cordless for years so I bet I will hate corded unless you know of some advantage.

Oh and not 70 quid unless it will last longer than 5 years...

All of my 5 working stations are either with Magic
or Mighty mice since at least three years up to six.

I prefer the Mighty cordless but my boys go for the
multi buttons Magic mice…no cats allowed in!

Thanks - I actually have a Magic Mouse somewhere but I don't like their "bar of soap" ergonomics. I suspect I'd dislike the Mighty for similar reasons.

I have the Logitech Performance Mouse MX which is very accurate and am using it with my MacBook Pro. This is the second I've had and they seem to last well. Had this one over 5 years now. They're expensive but for something you use so extensively every day it's worth paying the extra, IMO.

That's the exact one I have :) I thought it was called "Darkfield" but apparently that's just one of the technologies. I do really like them - but my experience says that if yours is 5 years old then you probably need to start saving for a new one :D

Started looking at the G600 which looks pretty cool.

Yeah. I guess it's not used to the same extent that it might be as I have a cinema screen and keyboard and connect the MacBook to it when I'm editing images. Otherwise I use the MacBook as a laptop. I've tried a few different mice including the Magic Mouse but just really like the ergonomics of the MX and it's accuracy when editing images in PS. Tough to beat.

I bet I went through the same process last time one broke.
  1. Shocked at the cost
  2. Searched for something better or cheaper
  3. Sulked for a bit because my favourite mouse was broken
  4. Bought another one the same
:D

I'm editing in LR and had to nick my wife's corded Logitech MX510. It's ruining my whole day.......

LOL! That was exactly the same process I went through to a word! Just ended up costing me more money for the cheap mouse I couldn't use! The only other one you could look at is the this one. It's a slightly smaller, portable version of the MX. I have one and it's actually very good. I prefer the MX Revolution that I normally use but the portable one is a lot cheaper.

£70 is only really £1/month if it lasts 5 year, or 27p/week.

If you look at it that way it seems reasonable. If you spent 1/2 as much on 1 that only lasts 2 years then you are in effect worse off.

You're right, and it's likely that I'll do that. But by my reckoning I've had 2 copies of the same mouse for 10 years now. I wondered if anybody had invented anything better or managed to produce the same cheaper in that time. Also, it seems I have now paid Logitech £140 for mice that fail :D

It seems to me that £70 is peanuts for something you say you may use for 8 hours in a day. If you've been using the same devices for 10 years without problems with your wrist etc then you are undervaluing your health! IMNVHO ;-)

Yeah, but surely somebody has invented something better in the past decade......

I bet it's like with cameras, all the R & D money is going into phone cameras where the sales are. Fewer people are using mice (using fingers, as I am at this moment) so fewer are being sold. Maybe the smart money is going on designing a better finger ;-) .

Just by another of the same - you're used to it, and you like it. Why search for anything else?
