I'am after a macro flash rig
camera is a D80 with a Sigma 180 apo macro lens,this is a large lens 260 mm
when mounted with hood and i,m finding my SB600 is getting blocked out on some shots.I was considering a Nikon R1 set up anyone using 1?
Briefly discussed this with Puddleduck who has just sold his:bang:and he didnt like this set up,any suggestions greatly recieved.

Regards Lee.

I use the R1 and don't have any issues with it  - just got to make sure the flash units are diffused , i also use a sb600 off camera mounted on a tri-pod sometimes - but this can be a pain to move about and set-up.

Thanks DM i know what you mean about using the SB 600 off camera PITA,
especially if your chasing bugs round the garden:D.
What do you use to diffuse the SB 200?

many thanks Lee.

I'm still experimenting - the R1 kit comes with angled diffusers which work well when mounted to the lens, then i've tried cut up milk bottles - tissue paper , grease proof paper etc,etc - could do with some mini light spheres really .

I have the same lens and camera but an SB800 flash. So far the best results I've had with this is with flash on camera, use the little clip on diffuser that came with the flash gun and leave the hood off the lens (it's huge, and, as you've found, can cause shadows!). I'm also interested in how other people do their macro lighting too.
