I bought a Nikon F80 body nearly 12 months ago with the intention of getting lenses for it. Here i am still with the body but no lens. Can someone recommend me a cheap allround lens for it please, not bothered about the make etc but it needs to be cheap(ish).

Thanks.

Best bang for buck would be the Nikon 28-80.

It's plastic, very light and super cheap.

Perfectly acceptable IQ but a fair amount of barrel distortion at the wide end.

It's also VERY flare resistant.

When I had my F55 I had a 28-80 AF i think it was that was sharp and cheep.

a bit plaggy mind as well but very light.

Lol what does "plaggy" mean ?

Plastic-ey

Mr Bump speaks in a weird version of Yorkshire at times, even I struggle to comprehend it!

I bought a Nikon 28-100 from ffordes for my F55 not a lot of money and a nice easy lens to use with nice sharp results

Would the 28-80 be one of these "Nikon Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5 AF G Zoom lens" ?

eye proper right

Belting, i'll look out for one then.

Another vote for the 28-100 AF G. I use one with my F80 & am very happy with it. For longer on a budget consider the 70-300 AF G. I have seen it maligned but IMO it is OK at F8. On ebay you could probably find the pair for under £100.

If you want a bit more expensive then look at the 28-105 AF D.

Cheers David. Do the pics come out ok with the 28-100 ?

Got no complaints with my 28-100. All my images are sharp I mostly take B=W so cannot comment on the colour quality

In my experience yes. It may be all plastic (including the lens mount so it needs to be treated with a bit of care) & feel a bit cheap but optically it is really good for the price. Have a google for reviews on it & you will find quite a few positive ones on the lens.

It isn't as good as the 28 -105 AF D, but it is maybe a third of the price.

Don't forget Sigma (but check for the best ones)....I was surprised how sharp was my Sigma UC 70-210 f4-f5.6 on my Nikon 401

Wasn't the 28-80 the kit lens for the F80?

Probably but I only got the body, they're worth next to nowt on their own.

For longer on a budget consider the 70-300 AF G. I have seen it maligned but IMO it is OK at F8.

I've looked at several of these and the CA and lack of edge sharpnes make me cry but granted it is cheap as chips Teddington have a shelf of them at about £50 but honestly a Sigma Apo 70-300 can be had for the same money and is much nicer.

I have my eye on a couple on eBay. How much should I be paying for one ?

Fforbes page of 70-300mm

One for 59

I paid 59 for a boxed one from MrCad a few years ago I wouldn't be paying any more than that for one.

The DG is newer lens so will go for more as will optically stabilized versions.

A month or so ago I was having a look at the Nikon70-300mm on a D600 and was less than impressed then remembered the next week to drag along the aforementioned Sigma 70-300mm I had forgotten I had (not much used as I have a 300mm F4.5 IFED manual lens) comparing it against two samples of the Nikon lens it was clearly better not brilliant but definitely better than the cheap Nikon the later VR lens is apparently much better but then thats 300 or so usually secondhand.

If you don't need 300mm have a look at the 70-200mm F4-5.6 AF uncle Kens review sorry should be 210

LCE have three between 79 -99 I was lucky enough to get a D version from them for 79 a month ago. Its much better built and much sharper than the 70-300mm and not that much more.

Wasn't the 28-80 the kit lens for the F80?

It certainly was for the F65! Slightly ashamed to admit that I traded mine in against a Tamron 28-300 along with the 70-300 that
came as a 2 lens kit. Still got the F65 but sold the Tamron on fairly swiftly. The 28-80 is by no means or any description a great lens but it does offer a reasonably priced option.
The 70-300 pre-VR Nikkor wasn't great but it was all I could afford at the time and was better than the cheap (non APO) Sigma of the same age. As abandon has said, the VR version is a lot better than either of the older lenses.

The Nikon 70-210 constant f4 is a better lens the the variable aperture version.

Thanks for all the replies. I have "borrowed" a 28-100 from my father to see how I go on.
