Firstly, let me say i am computer-retarded so please excuse my ignorance of technology.

I am looking to buy a laptop to replace my ancient Dell desktop, which now struggles to run IE and itunes at the same time.

I will be using it primarily to surf t'interweb, store my itunes collection (fairly large) and edit my photos with photoshop or similar when i finally get it. The edited pictures will then be stored on an external hard drive.

I'm looking to spend as little as possible really but i imagine the top of my budget is realistically £400 max.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks, Rob

Anybody help?

I would say if you can stretch a bit more and know somebody who can you get Uni discount get a Macbook. Sounds perfect for what you need it for, and theres less chance of it dieing and you losing your stuff haha.

Uni discount you get a hell of alot off, think its like 15% which is alot when your spending that amount of money.

I am a BIG Mac fan but if you want to stick with a windowz PC then i'd get a Dell laptop. I have had a Dell laptop for over 2 years and my Son uses it now and it does get abused but still works 100% and is very reliable [touch wood].

My other son has a Advent lappy from PC World and it's keyboard is loosing it's keys! Poor build quality but the OS is still ok...even if it is Vista!

Not sure what's available for £400 but Tesco do Dell machines and if you regularly buy from Tesco then you get money off at the tills with the vouchers so will make things cheaper.

I think Dell do student discount too, not sure though.

Acer 5930

This is my second Acer laptop and I can wholeheartedly recommend them.

Thanks for the advice guys, i get a corporate discount with Dell so i'll have look at what they can offer me.

Sorry, one last question. Are the refurb units offered by various companies (including ebay) worth entertaining? Or merely false economy?

You may have gathered, i'm not keen on parting with more cash than neccessary :)

Personally I'd have no problems buying Refurb but I'd buy directly from Dell (or Apple for that matter) as you'll get a warranty but I'd stear clear of ebay as I'd hate to think how you'd get any problems fixed if anything went wrong.

Also make sure that any savings are worthwhile. I'd expect to save in the region of £100 (or more) any less and I'd go for a new one.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I have to fairly wary as i'm basically computer-stoopid :(

The Spec looks ok.. What processor does it have? Also what laptop is it?

Sorry, that's a Dell Inspiron from their outlet store. I don't know what processor it has, hopefully some of this jargon will explain it :

Inspiron 1545 Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2.0GHz, 800MHz, 2MB)

Is that any good?

I'm a little embarassed at how little i know on this subject, so thank you for your advice all

Thats looks ok to me. :D

If you don't mind me asking how much is it?

Oh good!

It comes out at £323 with the £100 off, which is a bit of a bargain i think.
The offer ends today so i think i may take the plunge.

Thanks again for the helpful advice :)

I was asking the same question recently, I opted to get a Toshiba... so far very pleased with it!
