you can get a very good idea of the content of the book from lightenupandshoot.com - free
OneLight Photography Workshop DVD more technical that the one above and Zacks voice is a little monotone but good none the less
The video's on strobistsblogspot are very good as well - again free

Some of the Lovegrove stuff is quite good but the assumption is made that you are competent with using your camera to begin with. There is no explanation of things like f-stop or aperture etc.
I think it depends on what level of photographer you are (new, intermediate etc) and what style of portraits you want to learn.
