I am about to reach the point I can upgrade my phone and want to get something with a half decent camera on it so always have a camera with me. Have looked at the Sony C902 which I can get as a free upgrade but any other options or indeed views on this phones camera capability.

i used to have the nokia n95 8 gig it had a 5 megapixel camera and i never had any complaints with the picture

Being a snapper though I have to admit.....I either have a camera for taking pictures or a phone to chat to my mates and clients on......Never the twain shall meet as they say.

If you can get such good results from a £400 DSLR nowadays why would you even consider a camera-phone for photo taking??? Regadless of the quality, the shots will be cr@p compared to a DSLR and in my book, why settle for second best and bring cr@p shots home???.

That said I have an N95 but the camera is purely used to take shots of my tripod/camera location for record purposes (where quality isn't an issue) on my techical shots, where site revists or proof of location may be necessary.

Just my 2penneth.

My current phone (Nokia E61) doesn't have a phone and I haven't really missed having one, but they can be useful if you're out and about and you don't have your camera with you. That said, it's only really useful for record shots.

I have the Nokia N96. Heres a couple of sample shots from it:

My wife recently got the Sony Ericsson C905. 8mp camera phone. produces decent piccies also.

The thing with the iphone is if you get the right conditions, it can capture some fantastic quality images. Unfortunately those conditions are very hard to come by.

Iphone is crap for pictures just like every other phone on the market.

Just buy a cheap compact camera for about £40-50, keep it in the car or your bag. will b much better than a camera phone.

 Blimey......do you still have the receipt? I'd take it back to the shop if I were you!

;)

I also have the Nokia N95......and it's produced the best images from a mobile phone that I've seen so far. Probably because of the Carl Zeiss optics. It's also a pretty decent phone.....if you ever want to use it to make calls :D

I'll probably upgrade to the N96 when my contract is due for renewal in a couple of months.

The new sonyErricson it's the c905? 8.1 mega pixels. Had a very good write up in a camera mag recently.

UPDATE

I've just put the N96 on ebay! Its driving me mad! :bang: Great camera, crap phone. Freezes constantly, bluetooth connection on my car keeps dropping. Very slow on applications.
After spending hours on N96 forums, its clear that there are major firmware problems with this phone. Been told by a Nokia repair centre today that the customers are the testers for nokia. Its expected to be about 6mths before all the problems are sorted!!
The N95 is far better. Luckily I've still got a brand new one, so I'll stick to that.

The SE C905 has autofocus and lots of intelligence built in, according to the 16 page advert pamphlet thing in this months Practical Photographer.

Can't say I have ever taken a decent shot with any mobile, but I guess technology in mobiles must be almost as good as cheap compacts ?

Saw that insert too amnesia! Apparently has exposure control as well! Pics look good, getting tempted myself!

I've got a K850i which is pretty good but the flash is rediculously powerful which means everything just reflects and shines back at you :(

I had one of the SE K800i the first Cybershot phone and that had a pretty good camera. Mainly due to the proper flash, rather than an LED. In that respect I can imagine that the Nokia N82 would be a better bet than the N96 (it also has the 5.0Mp and same lens).

Having said that I went for the iPhone becasue I use it as a phone (and showing off pictures on the amazing screen...)

The 905 is brilliant and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to makes images and just want to have a passable camera in their pocket at all times.

The IQ is pretty much exactly as you'd expect from a phone with 8 megapixies. It's OK and actually less noisy than I was expecting but it's still a teeny chip and a teeny lens, although it is an f2.8 one at least.

Where it scores really well for me is it's ability to get a shot that's sharp, well exposed and do it in situations that most compacts wouldn't. The macro works, the best pic thingy is just genius, the option of autofocus or fixed is useful for choosing accuracy or no shutter lag.

...... and as a small bonus you get a very good phone, fast mail and web on the move and satnav too. :D

Having owned and used Sony phones in the past (considered some of the best camera phones) I still prefer my iPhone due to the useability. Being able to take photos with embedded geo tags, and then email or upload them to sites on the fly is worth the down grade in quality. Not to mention being able to view all your photos on the sexy screen

Oh yeah, there are so many things I forgot, the 905 does all that.

Without downgrading to an iphone too. ;);)
