Use LR, and learnt that pretty much just by playing with it, plus the occasional glance at the help manual - probably only use a fraction of what it can do!!!

Got CS5 Photoshop as I would like to do more with pics, make backgrounds all white as well other stuff. Never used PS before, so would like an easy to understand (for a non techie) to talk me though basics and more.

Can't recommend a CS5 book (haven't read any), but Martin Evening's Photoshop CS3 book was worth a read, so I would hazard a guess that the updated version for CS5 would be too.

I can suggest a book not to buy, unless it has had a massive overhaul between upgrades - The Dummies book for CS5. I had that for CS3 - What a pile of cack. I wanted something that was informative and gave a step by step guide. I wanted to know what layers was and how to use them - Got no infomation at all from the Dummies guide, so I must be a real Dummy!!

Changed to PSE8 and got a Scott Kelby book, if that is anything to go by, I can suggest a look at one of his.

I'm in the same position, never used PS before until getting CS5 as a gift.

I just purchased Adobe's 'CS5 Classroom in a book'.

It comes complete with a disc to save to your PC and has 14 lessons comprising of the basics up to the main new features of CS5,and from what I've read so far it's very user friendly for a beginner!

Kelby's are definitely some of the easiest to read and don't overload you with how things actually work, more like a cookbook approach to achieve the results you're looking for. Evening's books are much more textbook style and go into more detail than most photographers really need to know.

I've ordered the Scott Kelby CS5 book pre release. I think it's due out any day so probably worth waiting. I decided to when I ordered a few weeks ago from amazon for about £15.

"The Adobe Photoshop CS5 Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter)" is the title and I've just checked - it's due 3 August.

What he ^ said, you won't go wrong with Scott Kelby books, very very easy to understand and very informative, got that one on order myself :)

Mmm, Scott Kelby seems the way to go, although Martin Evening gets good reviews on Amazon...

It's been recommended to me by several people I know which in my book (excuse the pun) is worth more than amazon reviews from random people with random ability to judge.
