I currently have a Canon 350D with a couple of lenses but not planning to take it on a sunny holiday with me.

My compact is a Canon Ixus 2.1 mp and I feel needs updating if it is to satisfy my needs on holiday.

Any recommendadtions for a compact c£250? I quite like canon but am willing to consider any decent make

Now that you know your budget I would recommend going down to a decent size Jessops (one near Kingston upon Thames rail station highly recommended) and pick brains of the store experts (make them work hard for their monies ;) ) and feel & compare a few compacts and then make your informed decision.

Jessops do a price match but you don't have to necessarily buy at Jessops;)

For £250, you will have plenty of choice, probably too much so you might need to work out what you want from the compact.

As there are so many 10mp cameras out there very recently, the price of 6and 7mp has come right down and you will get something of great quality for your budget.

I recently bought a canon ixus 850 with image stabilisation (IS) for £200 on ebay. It was a new camera, but a 'grey' import. This included a 2gb card and the adaptor to convert the charger to a UK pin. It is worthwhile going into a shop, if nothing else to narrow down the choice, but if you have used a canon then why not stick with it?
If you see a camera you like in Jessops, check their on-line price as their store price is normally more than 15% higher.
Canon also have their own outlet store on ebay where they sell their own refurbished cameras with a canon warranty.

Another vote for the F31fd here. Got one myself (And a G7, and S3-IS)

it goes EVERYWHERE with me.

Plus the battery lasts an age (Over 500 shots per charge).

There is a lot said about poor outside shots, but -2/3 ev and all is good.
