new to this strobist stuff can anyone recommend a trigger system to fire my canon speed lights off- camera please - I have a canon 540 & a 580
Would like to use them as fill lights in reportage style situations

Never tried firing them off -camera so any advice appreciated (also looking for advice on small portable stands for them )

Depending on budget and if you need ttl, have a look at the yn622 for ttl or yn603 for non ttl.

You might also want to be looking at some modifiers, a flash bracket and brolly and maybe a softbox too.

The cheap stands you get from eBay or Amazon are fine to start with,

Just for clarity on Kev's post, both the triggers he mentions are made by Yongnuo, I'd recommend them too. But I'd go further and say get a YN622C TX for on camera.

Thanks v much
Does the YN622C TX then control the speedlights from the camera (incl power adjustments) or does it require additional units to do this ?
How the the Yongno compare to pocket wizard ?

Pocket wizards are very good but expensive. I have recently bought the yn622s and tx so cannot help much as am still learning to use them. There are a few vids on YouTube about the yn triggers which are worth watching.

The TX on camera controls the 622 s on each flashgun, capable of controlling zoom and power (fec or m), much easier than the camera menu.

^ What Phil says, get a couple of 622s and a 622 tx. More expensive than the 603s but you'll have TTL and HSS and easy control.

And unlike me save money as I bought the 603s and now upgraded to 622s. :-)

rather than start a new thread, so sorry to hijack slightly.. if i get the 622's which state high sync speed of up to 1/8000s, do you need to do anything to the camera to enable this? or does the camera simply know and let you sync up to that speed? I have a 7d if that makes any difference.

cheers

With a suitable flash gun and trigger, the camera will automatically switch the sync signal to HSS when the shutter speed rises above the normal x-sync limit.

I'm using a few 622c's. What's the advantage of using a 622c-TX on the camera over a 622c, if anyone knows, please?

Just easier, faster - direct access to settings on the back of the transmitter instead of via the in-camera menus.

That
Lots easier.
Using the camera menu was too slow to be experimenting with live subjects. The TX is simple.
And it allows functionality with some older flash guns that the flashgun or camera don't.
And it allows timing alterations for Supersync if you're playing with high shutter speeds (not HSS) flash (heads or speedlights)

Thanks :) Might get one to play with.

I have the Nikon variants, but same idea. I struggled with the 622 on the camera until I got the 622tX and could instantly see powers and zooms of each flash and mix and match manual and iTTL. Genius little box the 622TX. Very highly recommend.
I have the three different sorts of modifier for my OCFs: the Lastolite McNally Ezybox, which is great and my personal fave, but expensefull by the time you have bought the handle and mount; the f-stoppers flash disc, which is very portable and works well, but is not cheap, and the rogue flash bender which is a great bang per buck. Have fun!
