this guy dean (www.deanphoto.co.uk ) really enjoy his work and he's given me pointers before (on another car forum).

any one recommend any good spots, locations for some car shots?

Aztec West or Almondsbury business park on a sunday afternoon....the long roads in bradley stoke can be used for some decent pack/stock shots of the car in motion at about 1/125 to convey some movement.

Try loads of filters, flash and a polariser for the 'top gear' effect.

Hope this helps....

D.

thanks, well i know aztec west, so that's a start, then you lost me lol

how do you get the motion type pics, 1/125, what's that mean?

i don't have filters, polarisers etc.

Well, 1/125 is a decent shutter speed that will convey movement in the wheels if you either pan or shoot with the car approaching you (usa you servo mode).

Get some filters in then.

do you know if it's possible to adjust 1/125 shutter speed on the nikon d40. what should the display show and how about aperture f?

Suggest a serious read of the manual there. There are two ways to set the shutter speed on most DSLR's. One is shutter priority where you dial in the shutter speed and the camera works out the aperture. The other is to go fully manual. Certainly in manual mode you should have a scale in the viewfinder to tell you what the exposure is doing.

Sure, put the camera in TV mode, then set it to 1/125 and the aperture will manage itself. If it blinks, just up the iso until it stops.

Where are you in Bristol ?

You'll also need to be brave enough to mount a camera to some kind of rod or something with a remote release cable and drive alongside the vehicle in another car to get the motion type shots seen in the link you posted (especially if you want to get low like he did). He has some cool stuff. I like!!

It's the right time of year to be parking the car near/in field of rapeseed for that perfect yellow background/blue skies etc.

i'm based north bristol. just can't think of any imaginitive place.

Loads of places I can think of. You have the river Severn not far from you so have a look at a map and work out where the sun will be and go and find a suitable spot. I'm sure I've seen some taken from just north of the Bridge.

You also have some good locations with National Trust properties. You have the Cotswolds on your doorstep too. Go through Chippenham and head North up through Cirencester. Fab roads and some stunning rape and poppy fields.

If you want to go industrial you have loads of good settings around Filton. Some nice high contrast stuff would work there.

What kinds of shots and what type of cars did you have in mind?

not really been towards thornbury, but may go for a drive that way ;-)
