As above. I'm looking at something for home use on a budget. I know I'll probably be upgrading in the future, but right now it has to simply suffice for paper.

The cheapest option is probably a Chinese knock off of the Manfrotto expan system, you'd be hard pressed to tell the two apart most of the time and for 3 hooks with expanders they'd want something like £50 off ebay.

Okay, that's what I'm looking at too. Cheers.

I thought there was an issue with a couple of weak components in those Chinese knockoffs? But they can be sorted with a bit of DIY magic. I could be making all of it up...

I'm magic at DIY so that's handy. :D

There's several versions floating about, the first bunch I had I couldn't tell the difference between them and Manfrotto (besides the little Manfrotto sticker) but the last bunch I got in the plastic chain was inferior (very brittle, not a problem once up but the links would break too easily when assembling/disassembling).

I'm doubtful there's any real risk here but if it's a concern consider a second hand Manfrottos set, if there's no cracks an old expan should be just as good as a brand new one (still relatively expensive though).

Yeah, I'll do the same. Should be easy to make brackets.

Might be useful to someone, mate, but it's overkill for me. I only use grey paper.

I'm considering using vinyl now as more people are asking for family studio shoots. I have room for a 2.72m wide roll, but I'm unsure whether the aluminium @WelshNoob suggested is strong enough to prevent bowing.

What I suggested was plastic not aluminium, it's not a question of that bending its a question of the internal roll roll bending. If you get pipe that's as close as possible to the inside diameter of your roll and the roll supports its own weight, then the bend of the internal pipe won't matter.

The vinyl I'll be using if I go this way comes on aluminium so the problem should be solved now. I'm considering going with my gut and not shooting at home at all like this. It's such a ball ache spending an hour moving furniture in and out.
