Hi All,

I have a Nikon D7000 and I have an okayish lens. It is a 18-200 Sigma F3.5-6.3 but it isn't as sharp as i'd like. I am not a professional, photography is just a hobby and I like taking good photos when I travel. Anyone recommend any good lens (not prime lens)? My use will be primarily to use it while traveling hence I do not want a prime lens.
I know there will be lots of choices but I am looking for something very sharp. My budget is between £500-700. I do not mind second hand lens as long as they are in a good condition.

I saw Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 G AF-S ED Lens for around £730 used on eBay - is this something worth getting?

My knowledge on lens isn't great so any help and recommendations would be appreciated, thank you.

The 24-70 will not be very wide on the d7000 if you like taking landscapes on your travels. The tamron 17-50 is pretty sharp the Nikon 18-50 f2.8 better still. The sigma 17-70 I'd pretty good apparently and gives you a bit more reach.

24-70mm f/2.8 is pretty much the standard lens for any descent setup, though I can't speak for the Nikon G AF-S ED as I'm a Canon guy, but if it's anything like the 24-70mm f/2.8L USM it's probably worth having, but always do research, check out different vendors, and read up on the pro and cos. The f/2.8 means that it has a constant Aperture that stays at f/2.8 no mater where you are in the focal range. A variable aperture lens like the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM will close down the aperture letting in less light as you zoom in from 28 to 135mm. You can usually get IS [Not sure of the Nikon term - Image Stabilisation], and no IS versions of most high end lenses [though not all]. Some really expensive zeiss lenses don't even have auto focus, but their mainly used for portrait photography. That's the BIG thing about lenses! A lens is a tool for a job, so really the first thing you need to be asking yourself is what you want to do, then look at the best lens to do that job! Take the time out to do the research rather than spending money and having to spend even more late on!

Thank you both for your suggestions.

I cannot find the Nikon 18-50 f2.8 anywhere?

I found the Tamron one for around £300 on Amazon or £160 on eBay - link below. Is this the Tamron one you recommended?

Possibly was referring to the Nikon 17-55 2.8 which is a stellar lens. It's quite bulky though. The Tamron has always been well regarded. They're a little 'cheap' in terms of build quality but the trade off is a big cost saving and they're quite light too.

I use occasionally my 24-70 on the D7100, optically it is as you would expect superb but it's very heavy, unbalanced and is for all intents a very expensive 35 -105. If your sticking with DX then the 17-55 F2.8 is an excellent lens but is still a heavy old lump. Personally if it's to do a bit of everything then I'd get the new Sigma 17-70 and a nikon 35mm F1 .8 for if I needed a faster option in poorer light

Thanks all for suggestions. Just went to buy the Tamrom 17-50 on eBay for £160 brand new but sadly it sold. I will keep my eye out on one.
