Yes
I have many lap tops and none are quite right current one is an i5 hp pavillion dv6
what it lacks and I overlooked was a 1080p screen and a back lit keyboard
apart from that it is ok
now out of all the tens of thousands of models and their derivatives does any one know an easy and economical way to get what I want
The worst thing is the lack of a back lit key pad
this model was supposed to have it I missed the small print where it said it was an option, when I went back to complain it turned out it was an option but only available direct from hp oh the corporate world you have to love it
mobile phones had back lit keys 20+ years ago

Dell XPS.... Custom build. We have both 1080p screen and backlit keys. Both were extras.

any way of getting what I need at a better price than a custom build from del direct

Not that I know of... You can often find discount codes from Dell (google "dell discount code" - there's 10% off at the moment...)

I did ask my eldest as he has a dell with a dogs [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] display and is a software writer
but being my son he was not really interested in helping me and reeled off a load of complex jargon that went straight over my head lol and then said your hp is **** and walked off so I though I'd ask here
kids got to love them
I wouldn't have ever thought it was so hard to get what I wanted
googles no real help shop web sites are useless as are their staff and lap top specs are just a mine field of models that don't have any easy way of finding out if they have a back lit key board
I may just nip to b and q and get a head torch lol

15 inch MacBook Pro with retina display ?

never been an apple fan
lovely looking kit but at a premium price for the spec you get
I was hoping to get what i wanted for 6-800
the hp i have would be fine if it had a back lit key board like it was supposed too
i can cope with the screen res but if I have to buy another it might as well be 1080p as well

Instead of spending money on a back lit keyboard why not just put the light on or get a clip on led light? ;)

Not sure about Apple either. Build quality and reliability of my 2008 macbook has been mince compared to macs of old.

I think it's Asus that are supposed to be good quality and not too expensive.

Damn buggy tp app..

What I typed was - backlit keyboards are pretty much always optional extras as 90% people don't need them (let's face it who types in the dark) unless you go for a high end laptop where they seem to throw them in as standard.

I could switch the light on but that affects the display at night
I just want to be able to see my keys sat in my comfy chair watching tv and surfing the net without having to tilt the screen down every time I type
I suppose if I learnt to touch type that would be the cheapest option not easy being male though and 50 to learn this with sausage fingers
As we get older our eyes deteriorate
now 10 tears ago I never had a problem with this but now I find I need more light to see things clearly as well as reading glasses now
my old samsung also had bigger letters on each key than this hp

I'd just get another small light that didn't reflect in the laptop screen. One of those angle poise thingies would probably do the job. If you have a wall behind you then you can point the light at the wall so you have a diffused light source behind you to illuminate the keyboard without reflections.

Then you can spend the rest on more camera gear :D

The problem with external light sources is my eyes will go from f1.4 to f12 and then I'll have to increase the screen brightness
my eyes are alot slower that they used to be
I'll have to get a reading lamp some slippers a zimmer frame and some home help at this rate lol

Having more ambient light in a room is easier on your eyes. Makes it easier for them to adjust as there isn't such relative brightness/darkness to deal with.

Try it for a week with light levels you'd need to read a book with in that room. If it is no better, buy a new laptop :)

Perhaps you really need a larger tv? Richersounds have some nice led ones on offer ;)

If my tv got any bigger I'd need a larger house lol

my first mobile house brick phone in the 80's had back lit keys but none of my laptops have ever had them
it appears to be quite in demand these days and no doubt will be std on laptops soon

Hope not if it puts prices up.

the latest sony range has a form of back lit key board
I think it will just be thrown in at the std pricing structure that exists

I'm struggling to find one for reference but I'm pretty sure the backlit keyboard option on dell used to be about £60, that's about 10% of an average laptop price. For an option that most people will never use. Generally you have to spend above 600 quid to get one thrown in for what is essentially a waste of battery.

Most backlights are poor too, apples isn't particularly great I think due to the aluminium body between the keys it seems to cause a bit of glare from underneath. Dells variable backlight isn't too bad (never used it but just tried it to see). Seems like you need to go to their xps range to get one as standard.

Wouldn't touch Sony laptops with someone else's barge pole.

I like the XPS backlight. It was a £30 adder when I bought mine (June last year).

Another vote for Dell XPS, I have had mine for about 3 years now and aside a fault with the GPU which was a NVidea faul rather than Dell, it has been brilliant! It still handles everything I throw at it with no issues, with the exception of the latest games!

saw the sony's in penis world

you mean you don't agree
instead of it being an additional option it will be a feature on more main stream mid range laptops
it has been std equipment on gaming laptops for years
Manufactures are already producing back lit laptops I was just asking for recommendations for one that has the features I require

I was calling the statement in that post rubbish.

Like I said previously back lights won't be present in most to cut costs as it just isn't a feature that most want. If the demand was there then it would be more readily available throughout the ranges not just at the higher end.

Why not try the dell outlet and see if anything comes up at a fraction of the cost of the direct build? I saved close to £1000 on one from the outlet.
Their new stuff goes on around 14:20 UK time

Back lit key board issue solved, same HP pavilion DV6.
It was as simple as buying a back lit keyboard and plugging in the extra ribbon
Had to buy a key board any way as the dog jumped on my lap and landed on my key board and took out one of the buttons with his claws
Please note no dogs were hurt in the making of my back lit HP lol
