I am off to Disney on a once in a lifetime holiday in summer and as expected I will be taking my camera to capture some of the magic. The camera will be my Canon 5D3 and for portability I will probably use either my 24-70 or 50mm 1.8 whilst out and about.

My question is around a flash to provide fill given that it will (hopefully) be sunny. Currently I have a couple of flashes namely a 430exii and a Yongnuo YN600. Both which are quite large. I want something that isn't too big as the camera will be big enough already. I have looked at a few already but a lot don't have HSS. Anybody got any ideas

The 270exII fits your criteria.

Not what I'd buy, I'd take one of the guns you already have.

I have done the parks a few times and I have used a 17-70 sigma and a 70-200f4is. I found this a good combination i did have my 430ex2 in the bag but to be honest never used it. what other parks are you going to

Thanks Phil, I will probably have them both with me anyway along with a couple of triggers as you never know when an opportunity may arise. I was just a little bit conscious about walking around with a large camera etc hanging by my side, I have toyed with downsizing to a mirrorless (Fuji XT or a Sony A7) or high end compact, but a lot of those seem to not have a built in flash either.

We have already go tickets for the Disney parks so will probably stick to those, I don't agree with the Sea World, so will be avoiding there along with the associated parks. With regards to flash, my son always wear a baseball cap pulled down low (medical reasons) and therefore the top of his is face is always in shadow, hence needing a little fill every now and again.

I have a 270 for exactly this purpose on my mkii, the sort of thing a built in flash would be great for!

Pack light. there will be lots of long hot days of walking in the park along with long queues. If you are going on the rides too I found a DSLR and lens a bit of pain my rx100 got quite a bit of use. 430exii would be fine for some fill.

Im also off to Disney next month (two weeks time) and was going to take my 5Dmkiii, 24=70 f/2.8 mkiii and 50mm f/1,8 STM as well. I also have a 580EXII and 270EXII but the first is too large and the second not adjustable enough for what i want to use it for (exactly the same as you).

As Trisian suggested, Ive actually decided to take my 80D and 18-135 IS USM, along with the 50mm and 24mm f/2.8 as the days will be long and i dont want to carry all the heavier stuff around all day.

I ended up getting a Nissin i40. Its a really nice, small flash thats very easy to use as it has two dials rather than menus etc. the head rotates a full 360 degrees so unlike the 270EXII i can also bounce over my shoulder. Ive got the Sony version as well (from my a6000 days) so i knew it would work. Its not as small as the 270EXII but its going to work a lot better. It also does HSS

Ive been twice before, each time i had no issues taking a DSLR and 2 lenses. My thinking is if i have to take a bag i might as well have a camera in it as well.
Last time we were staying on park so it was no problem nipping back to the hotel if i needed something, but as we arent doing that this year i dont want to travel too heavy as we will be away for the whole day. Although i dont mind doing it over here i know what ill be shooting over there and know the lightweight stuff will do.

I used a 24-70 f2.8 more 95% of the time i was in the disney parks with the exception of the safari "ride" at animal kingdom at which point i used a zoom to give me some more reach. You can take cameras on all of the rides in disney (i have one of me from the memory maker on tower of terror where i am holding the camera up just as the lift doors open as i was hoping to get one of outside as they opened ). if you have something that will open up really wide that will be handy for you on dark rides and also for the firework displays since tripods aren't really possible for long exposures. I also took a gorillapod which was quite handy once the rides quietened down at night after the displays

Canon 270. There are not many small guns with HSS and the little Canon is more powerful than its specs suggest (compare at same zoom-head settings) and nothing else is shirt pocketable. Only downside I've found is it's slow to recycle in HSS mode when it's always close to max power, so pick your moment.

The Nissin i40 is more capable but a lot bigger and heavier.

Edit: also look at the new Canon 430EX-RTiii. A bit smaller/lighter than your current 430EXii and compatible with the YN 600. Get the Yongnuo YN-E3-RT master controller while you're at it and you have a sweet radio OCF system ;)

Another vote for the 270EX, it's small and light, just have some extra batteries handy.

There is also the Aerosmith ride, and i think the Mummy ride also dont allwow bags. its not a big deal though, there are lockers ot put things in.

Chris. If you do go the 270EXII route let me know, ill let you have mine for a good price.

The Aerosmith ride does allow bags as I took mine on (didn't even attempt photos though lol). The mummy ride is in universal though not disney and I didn't bother taking my camera to those parks as I knew it would end up stuck in a locker more than on my shoulder so I didn't see the point risking someone breaking in and taking it. Granted that certainly wouldn't be easy with so many people around but I would rather not take the chance.

you could be right about the Aerosmith ride. when we went we had a child in a buggy so maybe i left my bag with my GF as we were doing the child swap thing on most rides.
As far as Universal goes, i know its a different park but most people do both Disney and universal when they go so thats why i mentioned it.
Im also taking a couple of GoPros for the rides themselves. I couldnt even move my head on the Aerosmith ride, let along lift my arms lol. Then again, as its all in darkness i wouldn't have bothered.

Cant wait to get the camera set to ISO100 at this time of the year :)

Ahhh cool on the different parks, I just treated them as different beasts altogether tbh because disney you can take in as an overall experience and there's loads to photograph besides the rides but at universal it's all about the rides and with the odd exception there's not much to take pictures of. Either way I didn't complain as it gave me a reprieve on the days we were there from carrying camera gear all day lol. You ain't wrong on Aerosmith either, great ride though!

Yeah, the Aerosmith ride was the ride that helped me conquer my fear of roller coasters. I still have to conquer the Hulk though, probably not this time lol.

As ive done the parks twice now i know i can cut down on gear, ive got over 3000 shots from the previous two trips, but as my gear is much better now ill enjoy shooting as much as queuing/going on the rides.

the hulk was closed when we were there for its year long rebuild (i was gutted about that :(). I took far too many photos and because i shot in raw i regretted it to a point as i then had to process them when i got home. I think next time i would reign it in quite a bit with the photos or at very least shoot raw + jpeg so that the ones that are just snaps won't even need taking through photoshop to convert them but the ones that could make for decent pictures can be progressed a little more.

Anyways, apologies to Chris, it appears we have taken his thread in an unintended direction!

Yeah too many from me as well. Thats why im cutting down on gear this time. im also taking my ipad pro as i tend to use that more than LR desktop these days. At least i can filter the shots to FB while im there this time, rather spend longer than the holiday in front of the PC when i get back.

No worries @keeweeman, the little tips etc are most useful. With regards to parks, we will probably be giving Universal a miss and sticking to Disney. My packing list consists of:

Canon 5D3 (shooting to Eyefi card)
24-70 f2.8 (general use)
50mm f1.8 (general and low light)
70-200 f2.8 (just in case and animal kingdom)
430EXii & YN600 along with a couple of YN622C RX & TX (
iPad Pro 12.9 for editing and sorting.

Around the parks I'll have my camera on a SpiderPro Belt with a LowePro LensExchange 200 Pouch, so not too much to lug about. If anyone thinks I'm missing anything, please shout up.

After going to Disney a few years ago with my family my advice would be to forget taking the DSLR and take a good compact. Everyone will enjoy the visit more IMHO

I have thought about this, but I'm still to find something I like. It must have a viewfinder, flash, equivalent or close image quality. Ability to shoot full manual without having to dive into menus or touch screens. And all this for not a lot of money. I'm not convinced it exists :)

The flash I would would recommend is the Godox Ving. It not only has HSS but also TTL, which is always useful for "run and gun" style photography. The Godox Ving is an awesome flash that is powerful, full of features, easy to use and a fraction of the price of a Canon branded flash. Here's a review of the Godox Ving that may be of use to you. I was so impressed with my first Godox Ving I bought several more and I have never looked back.

I went about 2 year ago wish i had funds to go again going this year ! :( anyhow i took a Fuji X-T1 23mm f1.4 ( 35mm equivalent ) 35mm f1.4 (50mm equivalent ) and the 55-200mm... Most of my photos was with the 23mm although wish id got something wider just a few times.
If i was to go again id still take the same gear but the new X-T20 when it arrives later this month even though i own a 5D3 with plenty of good lenses, Not claiming Fuji is better just it was a ideal alternative giving decent image quality and much more compact to carry about all the time.

Your selection sounds like a good choice although i didn't use my 50mm equivalent too much, using the 24-70 would be ideal and just take the 70-200mm out for days when you go to Animal kingdom or Busch gardens.
I did my editing once i returned to the hotel with my iPhone and then posted to my Facebook lol and although you say your going just Disney i found the Universal very good to when i went there.

Thanks for that, I looked at the Ving a while ago but ended up going for the Yongnuo 685 because of the built in triggers. Might have another look.

Thanks for the tips. I do like the looks of the Fuji, in an ideal world (money aside) I would get a Fuji X-Pro or a Sony A7, however money as it is. I'm eyeing up a Sigma 35mm Art for everyday use

Yes the Sigma 35mm art would be ideal choice with the 5D3 (y) I already have Fuji gear along with Canon so its a easier choice for me rather than buying it all new gear for a holiday..
The mentioned A7 is excellent to with its 35mm which i have previously have owned the only problem i found was the rest of the lenses are similar sized to Canon gear so it wasn't much more compact then over the Canon.
