Looking for some advice on a sturdy boom stand that i need for an outdoor shoot potentially in windy conditions. Its likely to be trackside with flash and umbrella so needs to be pretty heavy (will be using sand bags also).

I have been looking at the Manfrotto 420B as it offers me the flexibility to use as a normal light stand also. Ideally not looking to spend over £150, seen the cheapo stands on ebay for £40 but i'm guessing they are not going to be up to the task?

thanks in advance

I haven't used the Lencarta Home Studio Boom Arm outdoors in the wind but I have no doubt it will be fine.

And it's well within your budget. The stand part is much larger/heavier than normal lighting stands and doesn't double up as one.

I have the 420B and (bought it before the price came down too) use it with both speedlites and studio heads. obviously you cant expect to mount a bowens head and a huge modifier on it at full extension, but when it's used sensibly it's fine.

It can also be used as a standard vertical stand, and in this configuration it is much taller than the stands that came with the bowens heads.... this was really handy during a recent shoot where the client was up on a balcony.

A couple of sandbags on the base and a counter weight on the boom and you'll be ok in most sensible weathers.

Big A - what are you supporting... a proper flash (studio) head or speedlights? Not quite clear.... :)

TBH, I'd be worried about about the brolly caving in if the stand is firmly secured. If it's that windy the stand could go over, the brolly will probably go first.

If you already have lightstands, then you can go with the clamp option like this. This is what I'm going for to support a 40cm softbox, bare speedlights and a 28" Westcott Apollo outdoors. :)

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Specialman - it'll be supporting a speedlight, Pocketwizard and umbrella. to be honest it is the umbrella that i'm worried about as it will cause the instability if the wind gets up, which is why i want a fairly sturdy unit that can cope with the wind (i'll be using sand bags also).
I'm not overly fussed if the umbrella got trashed as they are pretty cheap. its just i'd rather not risk the stand falling on the track).

Like the look of the Lencarta weights aswell
