as i'm still a newbie with my nikon d40 and to dslr with lens kit, is there a good book out there, i could take on holiday?

something with a bit of technical stuff, but not too hardcore and go way over my head etc.

On The Road by Jack Kerouac. F-all to do with photography, but you never know how it might inspire you...

Light, science and magic - 3rd edition

You'll want to get off the sunbed and away from the book and putting your camera to good use instead of beinn confused and inspired at the same time.

Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson

Definately. I am a newbie too and this book is invaluable. It teaches you the techie stuff but in an easy to read, easy to understand way, I have re-read it about 3 times now, when I went on holiday with my camera for the first time I made sure I packed it for reference. It is a really really good book for beginners.

Would agree - a good read and clearly explained - ignore the general digital books IMO

#1 The D40 manual...

#2 Digital Photographer's Handbook by Tom Ang

#3 Basic Photography by Michael Langford

Have a look in your local library and see if any of the books there take your fancy. You could also have a trawl around your local charity shops and see what you can pick up - even if the books aren't what you hoped they would be, you'll still have contributed to a good cause!
