Hi There,

Could anybody recommend a barcode builder/generator?

Microsoft Access can produce barcodes. If you know VBA then a custom application can be built.
Bartender by Seagull Scientific is another label software. It will serialise codes and if memory serves me right can accept ActiveX triggers.

we use that at work to recreate product labels for returns.

trouble is depending what the OP wants them for you cant just create barcodes and drop them into the retail circulation. if its for your own internal use then its probably alright.

We used to use internally generated barcodes on labels for our products. One barcode was the serial number for example. These products then went out to retail. It was fine with the european approvals agencies and fine for export to EMEA. This was for a highly regulated life safety product. I can't see the problem, but then I am no expert, just going on past experience.:shrug:

we have to buy blocks of barcodes.. i think its to do with unique codes out in the national retail world.
 
You need to purchase the barcodes in blocks, or else will likely clash with someone else's barcode if you use them for retail or anywhere outside your business.
The barcode people get very protective if they become aware of any abuse of their barcodes, which are regulated.
Bartender will output barcodes from numbers input in the correct format, and generate the last digit automatically, which is a check digit. There is a free trial of Bartender available on the Seagull website, but when the trial ends, the software inserts incorrect characters in the barcode.
 
Kalvin, you want Halse or Timestone software. Produces barcodes for you to shoot and adds the info to the metadata of the portait.

ParkerFranklin lab supplies it free but you are tied in to their lab services.
School pics Int in Notts do the same
UKDPI in Brighton also use Timestone and provide software license for you

You can shoot to laptop or add barcode to camera. Nikon (mid range body upwards.) or a Fuji S5 will do the trick.
 
All you need is a font...


There are a thousand free barcode fonts out there.


Then just go into Word / Wordpad / Excel / notepad / whatever, set the barcode font, and type whatever you want...
 
Err by the way you don't need to "buy barcodes in blocks" that's complete nosense.

If you're stocking products in ASDA you need to but I presume this is for some kind of photography related project and so that is completely irrelevant.

I have programmed numerous barcode related projects in the past.

Hi everyone, many thanks for the replies. Yes Daryl you are right I need it just for my own use. I just bought the canon 7d with the built in barcode reader. The software form timestone and halse is not cheap and at the moment I just need it for composites.
