never done anything like this so no clue where to start any help wouldbe great

Mac or PC? If Mac - for simplicity I'd suggest iMovie.
PC - Wax

thanks guys have mac at home but dont want to do work at home unless i have to will look at the windows live pack then

Most if not all the video editing programs let you have a 30 day free trial without restrictions so you could just download one and try it.

I've not found one that isn't flaky in some way or another yet. Sony Vegas was good back when I was using 32 bit windows but seems terrible on 64bit.

I since bought Cyberlinks power producer which is native 64bit. It works but still crashes out sometimes when rendering. I have version 9 and they are currently on v11 which means paying to upgrade but they seem to add new features I don't need rather than fix what doesn't work.

If you find one that is 100% reliable then let me know

Oh and upload to youtube at the highest quality you can for your internet connection speed. They will resize it down for lower quality versions that stream easier.

Go and have a look at EDIUS its free for 30 days on an unrestricted demo - its not cheap BUT it can edit anything it seems and I love it.....encoding options for web video are included too without any watermark or digital bugs on screen
