Hi guys,

I was in a car yesterday and the driver had metal on and its not a genre I have ever been interested in but I quite liked it so think its worth a second look.

Anything good to youtube :D

Do you know what he was playing? That might provide a good starting point as it's quite varied

Also, knowing your current music tastes will help.

Metal has quite a variety of influences...

current musical tastes varied...... but of a radiohead/placebo/garbage phase atm but I'm looking for something a bit outside that maybe so it needn't be a restriction

and I'm pretty sure it was neither german or american as we discussed those branches of metal but was sung in english, and had some battles in, and I can't remember the name.....

v witty guys :D *** later in pub we did discuss building wooden swords for fighting with and how to properly weigh them :O

Well here are some of my favourites anyway

Within Temptation - Very good metal with fine female vocals
Nightwish - Female vocals again, but much heavier with more fantasy influences. recommend you look for the material before their latest album (dark passion play) as IMO the vocals are far stronger and set them apart from the rest
Rammstein - have a listen to the Mutter album, german but very good metal IMO
Airbourne - Take a step back to the early AC/DC sound but with a 2009 production quality - good honest rock
Dragonforce - Not really my bag but +1 for absolutely top quality mental fast guitar solos and a fair few fantasy lyrics
Evanescence - OK, more female vocals, you may be getting a hint I like that in metal. These have two albums, both with a fairly different sound. I'd say try the second but if you are youtubing it any track will do.
Other bands I enjoy
Megadeth, Lacuna Coil, Paradise Lost, The Cult, actually, there are a lot. SHout up what you think of the above and I'll route through my music collection with more ideas.

Good choices, but Rammstein might be a bit too metal to start off with :D

Other bands worth going for -

Dream Theater - varied styles, from metal to rock to prog stuff, plus alot of lighter songs and fantastic musicianship. Check out the albums 'images and words' and 'scenes from a memory'.
Rush - not as metal but still quite heavy, especially live.

Iron Maiden, Guns'n'roses, Van Halen (more heavy rock than metal) will get you going.

STEEL PANTHER. you will wet yourself laughing while you ROCK.my daughter just bought me the album. brilliant. listening to it now again, in fact. http://www.myspace.com/steelpantherkicksass
go find aceldama on myspace too. awesome live band.

Seventh son of a seventh son now we are talking

This is soooo difficult to do - because metal is such a varied field now.

I could name band after band after band who have all done songs I like - but you might hate...
I used to write for Powerplay Magazine and reviewing CDs was great fun...until you had to listen to albums you hated more than once just to review it!

I'd add the following ideas :

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime and Empire
Blaze - any album
Savatage - Dead Winter Dead, Gutter Ballet
Disturbed - The Sickness
Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory
Fates Warning - FWX
Green Carnation - A Blessing In Disguise
Threshold - Critical Energy and Dead Reckoning

Should give a good mix of metal...

Monster Magnet
Clutch
Helmet
Tool
Prong
Deftones
Kyuss
Early Man

Some of these aren't necessarily traditional metal but are metal/heavy rock influenced. Got some heavier stuff for when you graduate :)

Quite impressed with the bogtrotters The Answer (check out Cry Out)
Can't beat Classic Rock! get a copy of the The Classic Rock magazine or Metal Hammer
Yeehah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ps don't even think of playing unless its LOUD

Try a band called All That Remains.

If you want something to remove the car speakers, have a listen to the 'From Mars to Sirius' by Gojira. Superb French band which I've only just started listening to.

Here's the opening track - Ocean Planet

How about these crackers:

Def Leppard
Aerosmith
Thunder
Megadeth
The darkness
Van Halen
Whitesnake

I just googled Steel Panther, heard "Death to all but metal", almost wet myself and then bought the album. Top suggestion!

Not a metal fan but I enjoy a bit of Metallica.

Maybe even Rage Against the Machine or Faith no More?

I'm listening to Enter Shikari at the moment, but you can't really go wrong with any of the suggestions already made! :D

There is only one way to listen to metal....... LOUD!!

I have to go along with the calls for Metallica, if you're looking for their best work, get Kill Em All/ Ride the Lighting/ And Justice for All, or for something more radio friendly, the Black album.

Agree with most of the other acts already mentioned, I also recommend Stone Sour. Corey Taylor of Slipknot, his more melodic side project, really good band.
