Hi all

Anyone got any recommendations for a decent boom stand?

Ideally able to take the weight of a Bowens studio head with a softbox and still be portable enough to use outdoors with a speedlite.

I realise that might be an impossible task to find as stability comes with weight at the cost of portability.

Cheers

I'd thought about the pole option for outdoor use, but the lower power from speedlites and assistant movement could lead to varying results.

Lencarta have a new one. Saw it in Garry's studio. Looks really rather good but not sure on the price etc.

There are in fact 3 new ones, I'm still waiting for a price on 2 of them:'(

But both of the ones in my studio are far too big and heavy for the OP's purpose. The 3rd one is an attachment (goes onto any decent stand) and that will do the job.

Calumet do an own brand version of the manfrotto for cheaper iirc, but they're pretty much the place to go for grip kit.

Sandbags are about a tenner on ebay, get some, you need them to work safely with booms.

I shouldnt need one that much at ifrst...so am going like Zack Arius with a Ghetto Boom...2 lightstands...a superclamp on one...and the other balanced...but Ill only be using a speedlight and accessories...so...a bit of balancing and a wieght on the bottom later...WAALAAA...I HOPE...!!!

Okay the one Calumet does looks good...have a look on their site...some different adapters etc...

I've got this Manfrotto 420 £135 http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-mn420b-combi-boom-stand-with-sandbag-black/p1018877 Probably as close as you'll come to studio and portable (you can add dolly wheels I think) but it's inevitably a heavy and unwieldy thing when loaded up. I wouldn't take it outside without an assistant clinging on to it, but if you've got an assistant you could maybe have them hold the softbox on a pole/handle thing?

We've got one of these in the studio at work and it's a decent piece of kit, although we rarely use it with Bowens heads attached due to lack of space. I have used it with speedlights attached and it's great for that, although you still need a counterweight when you're at full stretch.

Thanks for all the replies Guys

Gary, any chance you could let me know the details of the lencarta bits when you have them?

I'll have a look at the manfrotto stuff at focus..... Can't risk dropping a studio head

I have the Manfrotto 420 too. Very good but big and pretty heavy but portable if you have an assistant.

I'll do that Brian, and they will be at Focus too - or at least the largest and smallest ones will, not sure about the middle one yet.

Nice one Gary, I'll be sure to pop over and introduce myself this year.... Never managed to get round to lencarta last year.

Thanks Patric

The manfrotto seems to get good reviews and comments.
