Can anybody tell me if there is a problem using rechargeable batteries in a flashgun. I have an Olympus FL36 R flash unit which I use with Olympus E520 DSLR. I have been told that it is not adviseable to use rechargeable batteries in the flash (the reason for this was not explained) Is this the case or is it safe enough to do so. Thanks in anticipation.

If anything I'd say it's advisable not to use regular alkaline batteries in a flashgun as you'll go through a set of cheapies in 20-30 full power flashes.....

I certainly do in my SB-900's.

As above; I use Powerex 2700mAh rechargeables in my flash.

I might be wrong about this but the issue people alaways used to use was the fact that NiCd etc will redharge your flash faster due to them being capable of delivering high current so if you're repeatedly using high output flashes then you can overheat your gun quite quickly. You just need to use a bit of common sense and not hammer it if it's on a high power level. Give it a bit of time to cool off.

NB I use rechageables in my guns too.

Me too in the 430ex and mt-24ex. 7dayshop 2800mAh.

I can think of 2 possible reasons not to use NiCads or NiMH batteries in flashguns - #1, they both self discharge fairly quickly and #2, they deliver around 1.2V each rather than the 1.5V you'll get from alkalines.

#1 is easily avoided by ensuring that they're all freshly charged before a session and #2 may be irrelevant as long as they can provide enough current.
