Would much appreciate advice on this: recently used a new Pentax K100 DS with above batts [Uniross] which lasted for only about 40 shots. Pentax says 2500mAh Ni-MH should give around 300 shots...:bang:
I checked battery voltage before and after use and mine went from 1.5 to 1.35 V. approx.
Conditions of use were warm weather, very little flash used and no autofocus at all : was using an old manual focus K fit lens.
Independent tests show figures very close to above Pentax figures so is it just a case of 2100 to 2500mAh being the problem ?
I would add that the batts I used have not been in regular camera use* but were charged up for about 20 hours which is about right.
:help: Cheers folks

*They've been used in radios from time to time

thats terrible.
20 hrs seems an awfull long time to charge.
may be worth getting a clever charger.
we use 2500 or 2600,s in our flash ,s.last way better than 2100,s .
only take a few hours to charge. and i rotate em, so all the batteries are used regularly.
we have about six sets of four..

Lots of things can make AA rechargables deteriorate and reduce the capacity. I'd buy some new ones and try your test again.

I have two sets of uniross 2500mAh Ni-MH and a set Energizer 2000 mAh that I use with my SB-800, one set of the uniross are ok, but the other set even after a full charge can be unpredictable. I think it must just be a bad set in my case as the Energizer's are charged in the same charger and they are fine.

Are you using the charger that came with them? as 20 hours is a long time, i know with my uniross charger it only takes 90mins to do a set.

This is a multi-system charger which has had good reviews, so if that's OK, and I need new batteries, which are the best brand and capacity to go for ? They've got to be NiMH, as camera won't take anything else..
Thanks for your :help:

I use the green type because they're similar to Sanyo Eneloops and will hold their charge for extended periods. If I were you I'd also buy their new 2900mAh type and see which you get on better with. I got some 7dayshop own-brand 2500mAh when they were new on the market - some of them are almost useless.

I got some 2800mAh cells with a 1 hour charger from 7day shop for less than a fiver, I use them in my flash and the easily last a days shooting.

Get a new set of cells and try them, 40 shots is dire they may well have the voltage but you can't accurately mesure their capacity or if the charger is actually putting enough in.

I've had some 2100's brand new and fully charged discharge after around 5 flashes in the 580EX, the 2400 last around 10 and the 2800's around 100. I guess it's down to problems with Uniross batteries :(

Had other makes and they are fine. I know [back in the day] my old Fuji bridge wouldn't fire up with Duracell Energizers brand new in it ...

I bought some batt-tech ones off ebay - 2800mAh and charge them in a Energiser wall plug charger - they don't give huge lifetime in my pocket Canon A570IS, but then some branded non rechargeable AAs virtually say low power when i put them in new. I thinkt he higher power rechargeable cells are a lot more variable in performance - there seems to have been a fairly rapid jump in mAh figures int he last 18 months, 1600mAH was anout the limit then, now people are claiming 2900mAh or more !

Thanks for the info

That does seem a short time. Do these suffer with memory problems? I've got 2200's in the compact and they last ages.. I also bought some 2900 for use in a helmetcam for the mountain bike from Vapextech on ebay, which are spot on too:thumbs:

Another vote for Vapextech ones here - use them for my RC cars, last for ages compared to other brands.

Just make sure you charge them correctly, at the correct rate for the right amount of time...

So keep fingers crossed! :suspect:
