Hi all,

I have a canon 580ex mk2 flash and would like to know the best rechargable batteries to use with it.
I seem to remember David ( pookeyhead ) giving good advise on this some time ago but can't find the thread.
Have read the SANYO ENELOOP are good but would like to hear from others.

For AA/AAA batteries it has to be Sanyo Eneloops in my opinion, and the Sanyo MQR-06 charger is one of the cheapest that has 4 independent channels and does proper dv/dt charge termination, rather than a dumb timer.

I mainly use the eneloops, but at times have also used the 7 day shop good to go ones.

The 7dayshop good to go ones have mixed reviews, but I love them, however there was a bigger difference between them and the bigger brands which has shrunk somewhat.

I'll never go back to standard rechargeables, the nature if my flash use means I often charge batteries that don't get used, which they don't like much.

7dayshop is where I bought my Eneloops from and they had (and still have) a special deal for a four pack of the 2450mAh plus the associated charger for £20.

Be careful to make sure you get the high power 2450mAh version though as there are lots of other variants with lower power (down to 750mAh I think so a massive difference).

Edited to add: it's actually easier than I made out: the really low power (750 & 950) are AAA, so there are only two variants of the AAs: 1900 (white batteries) and 2450 (black batteries). Easy!

Thanks for the replies, have ordered from 7 day shop, good price.:)

eneloops are good
for a random cheap 'brand' I've started using NiMh VAPEXTECH ones. they made a cheap 8xAA charger too.

Blu3fire asks-Did you get the new xXx version of these? Just wondering how you are getting along with them if you received them?

I got the AA XX (2450 Mah ). Have only just charged them and put them into my 580 ex mk2. Fires the flash non stop in test mode.
Good price at £19-99p which includes the charger

I've had pretty good luck with the Tronic LSD batteries and smart charger from Aldi (or Lidl, can't remember) specials that come around quite often.

+1 for Eneloops.

I also like that they don't lose charge when not used.

Another vote for eneloops from me. Carl - I've bought these from 7dayshop in the past.

I switched to eneloop xx cells a couple of months ago, sourced via amazon. So far they seem to be doing ok in flash guns and triggers. My Magic Mouse seems to run flat a bit earlier now under the same editing / useage. But the eneloop charger I bought with them does a decent job of returning them to service.

Personally I use the GP Recyko, brill batteries and they never let me down.

Have a look at www.component-shop.co.uk. They do both eneloops and equivalents, which I've been using for several years. The latest versions have been very good, giving >600 shots for a single pair in a Samsung compact.

I tend to use 7DayShop hybrids as well and I've had no trouble with them.

Whilst we're on the subject - get a decent battery charger! The longer term performance of your AAs is to a large part dependent on how well you treat them. Fast charging (i.e. more than 500mAh) isn't doing them a whole lot of good.

I have a couple of the awesome Technoline BL-700 chargers and although they are pricey, they actually save you money on the long term because your cells last longer and hold charge better. You can also use it to week out the crap ones and match sets with a similar capacity if you are geeky enough. Which (as you've probably gathered) I am.

Another vote for Eneloops here. Use them on a camera which otherwise eats batteries (both NiMh and non-rechargeable), it's having trouble killing the Eneloops.
