as per title really, would like to hear your opinions of a good canon fit lens for nightclub and gig photography:

have used an 18-55 kit lens and it was long enough, although maybe something maxing at around 70mm would be ideal for gigs.

Looking for something nice and wide, but to a budget of under £400

any tips?

regards

Maxing at 70mm, you'd want to go for the 24-70mm f2.8

I know this is an expensive lens, so I'd go for the Sigma version, with the Canon fit. I've used it before and although it doesn't feel as smooth as the Canon L version, it's still a great lens.

I used to use a Sigma 28-105/2.8 for band photography, then changed to a Canon 28-135 IS lens which, although slower is a great lens. IS handy too.

I read somewhere recently about a pretty good 'tog that swears by his canon ef 50mm f/1.4 USM for indoor gigs. ISO set quite high and no flash.

Excellent combo, alot of music togs will use nothing else, although the o p wants something longer than his 18-55 kit lens.

yep, have thought about a 50, but i need the zoom as the club photography is more taking pictures of groups than arty farty light trails!!

i already have a 24-135 f/2.8-4 for motorsports

i would like something wider than that!

How about 17-55 IS lens:shrug:

well you probs won't find a lens usable in a club and at a gig.
400 pound will get you either a 50mm f1.4 or
a 50mm f1.8 and an 80mm f1.8

for clubbing the kit is probably ok, maybe pick up a wide lens like the tokina 10-22 (in budget I think) but the important thing for clubs is the flash, and the wideness - neither of those primes would work well in a club imho

As a side issue, flash or available light?

I've always been into available light photography, and digital lets me do things that I could only dream of with film. Nice smooth grain at ISO 800 with my aging 5D, and no messing around with colour-correcting filters - all fixed in RAW :) Or convert into mono for a gritty documentary look.

Having said that, you can get some cool second-curtain sync effects with flash.
