Reasonable dress - what is it?

No
I'm covering an outdoor athletics event tomorrow and the organisers have asked for 'reasonable dress' to be worn.

As we know it's going to be a scorcher. I was going to wear tailored shorts and a polo shirt. I'll take a change of clothes in the car just in case, but I thought I would ask on here if you thought that would be acceptable?

I could ask the organiser, but don't really want to bother them with mundane stuff this close to the event.

Thoughts?

'reasonable dress'

Smart casual

So trousers, not jeans or shorts

Shirt, long or short sleeve & no need for a tie, not a polo shirt though

Shoes and not trainers

I suspect they are on about men wearing just shorts and women putting a bit too much on display.

I think that a blazer and chinos, nice shirt (possibly with a cravat), and a straw boater to top things off should see you through.

Toodle pip;)

Sod that in this weather. No idea where you're talking about, but where I am it's 22 degrees already and it's 7:20am.

Blazer my arse.. LOL

I think that this is exactly the sort of event that Coco Chanel invented the little black dress for. It fits any occasion.

It should look lovely on you.

One person's reasonable is another's unacceptable.

Personally, I hate any sort of shorts and don't think they are smart regardless of any tailoring involved.

Steve.

I think you may have missed the humour David ;)

Steve.

In Bermuda, shorts and short sleeve shirts are considered business attire, let alone smart casual. But they do get days of 100F and 100% humidity, so fair do's!

I suppose shorts are acceptable at an athletics event but if someone turned up wearing shorts to shoot my wedding he would be sent home to put his big boy trousers on.

Even worse than shorts are those hideous 3/4 length trousers.

Steve.

I do hate getting invited to things where they say things like this. Everyone has a different view. Personally, an outdoor thing like this I would say a polo and nice chino style shorts are fine. But then I favour casual rather than business dress. If someone turned up to my wedding to shoot and was in shorts I would not have an issue - I employ them to take pics not look smart.

This is why I hate the word smart casual. Your description of smart casual is my dinner wear.

Smart casual for me is jeans, shirt and clean nice trainers or shoes.

I would said reasonable dress in hot weather is shorts and a polo. Not speedos, last time I did a shoot in speedos I was arrested.

Smart casual never includes jeans or trainers.

Oh ok sorry Gok wan.

I think you will find many people will disagree here. I would say for me a shirt and a nice pair of teans with clean smart trainers is pretty much the definition of smart casual.

It is 2013 not 1950. Its also about how well you wear your cloths. I have seen people in a suit looking a mess and people in jeans and t looking sharp.

Agree, even a polo shirt with jeans.

:plusone:

Jeans and/or trainers, no matter how expensive, are not smart.

Heather

I agree. They are casual. But with the term being smart casual that's half of it covered. So finish of with a nice shirt or blazer and you have smart casual hehe.

I guess it depends on the person and like I said how you carry your look.

I look like an idiot in a suit and would never wear one... And I mean never. My day to day wear is shorts and t this time of the year in the studio.

Nope, jeans and trainers are never smart (however clean or new they are).

I am quite the sartorialist even if I do say so myself and typically look smarter than all around me so may be judging this from a different viewpoint. (As I sit here in my Boss suit, Gucci shoes and Eton shirt...)

No cravat?

:)

haha how true.. To all those suggesting jeans and trainers.. how do you know the OP isnt a 60 yr old, 5ft tall, 24 stone bloke.......... in jeans and trainers?

Personally its comfy trainer like shoes.. always darkish not stand out white..... nice pair of farahs and a long sleeve top (to cover tattoos :( )

That's the thing. What looks smart on a 20 yo would be very different to a 60 yo. At the same time body shapes and types make a big difference.

I have a musclular build and with wide shoulders and small waiste blazers and suits look terrible on me and always fit badley where as a tailourd shirt and jeans with black trainers looks tidy. For weddings a go trousers and a polo for the studio I am casual. Eqch situation and person is different.
