I am trying to get a better understanding of how my flash works and have tried using rear curtain sync. I expected to have motion in the picture and the final part of the motion to be frozen with the flash. What I have instead is some areas of transparency i.e. the areas that were moving are visible but you can see through them and the areas with less movement have been frozen.

How come I did not get the moving areas frozen when the flash fired?

You will always get some transparency (ghosting) unless the movement is against a black background. But whatever else is happening is very hard to say without seeing an image.

Because you're capturing ambient light of the background when the subject is not covering that area. If someone walked across the frame for example all of the background would be visible at some point so it will register on your exposure.

okay, that makes sense now. Any suggestion on how to keep the same effect but have no transparancy for the moment the flash fires? I assume photoshop, but would a second photo need to be taken or is there another way?

See post #2 ;)
