Really struggling with canon 500mm

Just call Canon Elstree and explain the situation to them. I'm sure they'll send a UPS label out and you just then call the courier to book a collection day and time. If you are a CPS member then it will be done in 3 working days, if not it will be 10. Involving WEX just adds another step and further time to the repair process.
 
The WEx Ts & Cs don't contradict the laws, or at least not in the ways you're implying.

1. The laws do not distinguish between repair or replacement.
2. The laws do not contain any provision for consequential loss.
3. The laws do not require the retailer to refund / repair / replace without first establishing that it is a genuine fault rather than, say, damage caused by misuse.

That's what I'd do.
 
Well it got sent back to Wex a couple of weeks ago, 10 working days ago I received an email saying it was delivered to Canon. There's been no news since then, I'm a little bit concerned that I wont have the lens for the airshows etc. When i rung up Wex they didn't know the progress as the first they hear is when the lens is ready for delivery and fixed. When i asked for a replacement they said there's no chance unless the lens is irreparable.
I'll ring them up again in an hour to push for info.

Ring Canon directly then and explain to them and ask for the status, Ive done similar with Sigma and they gave me updates after the retailer had sent it in.

. I searched for you to see how you were going and was a bit concerned to see no outcome on this. I haven’t been out with the lens a lot due to weather, illness etc. Can you tell me what happened to fix it please? The lens is focussing well... I just wanted to know. I realise this sounded a bit abrupt. Apologies, Nick.

I have edited my post... sorry, Nick, I’ve had a tricky couple of days. Filter failure.... of my actions.

Sorry if my post looked like a negative criticism..................I was just in my cackhanded humour showing surprise at the revival of a nigh on 4 year old thread ;)
