right so this is what im wondering... if anyone on TP can help id appriciate it alot.

got two constant light soft boxes... daylight bulbs...

can i get the professional look with a white background (photoshoot style) if you know what i mean? where you dont see any detail of the white...

or does it have to be strobes?

Continuous lighting isn't ideal for all sorts of reasons, but as far as a white background look is concerned it will work as well as flash.

If you can adjust the power, have more power on the background light.
If you can't adjust the powre, have the background light closer to the background than the other light is to the subject.

ah yea i see... so one light on the background... one on the subject

good idea that.
 
It's less about the duration of the light than it is about the intensity.. you could almost certainly blow the background if you wanted, but whether you could do it at a meaningful shutter speed, aperture or ISO for your chosen subject (not stated) is another matter entirely..
 
You might need to use the 50 1.8 wide open and bump the iso up too just to avoid movement blur? But it really does depend on how powerful your lights are?

basicaly got to take pictures for a friend as a favour and want to go for that professional look... got two mains constant light soft boxes and a 50mm f1.8 just need to know a good set up to start from. as i do not have a clue about flash photography yet
 
You still haven't said what these are pictures of..

.. if it's still life then it's unlikely to be a problem.. anything that moves and exposure duration becomes critical and intensity is important.

Suck it and see.. set ISO to 200, open the apertrure to f/1.8 as you can and experiment to see how long an exposure is needed to blow a white background with one of your lights. You need one proven reference point to know whether you can get a useful exposure for the subject.
 
ashley have a look on youtube for hi key lighting tutorials using two lights. It's much easier to copy that than to listen to advice and try it. Good luck.
 
Maybe have the subject in front of a window - with thin white nets, expose for the subject and try and blow the background that way?

ah sorry. its of a person. i will try that idea... appriciate it as im still learning
