Realistic Colours Help...

I feel pretty confident that my images are improving since i have started but i fell i still lack a bit in the processing.

I have often had photos that have been taken on an overcast day and i cant get anything i like from the image so i end up leaving it.

Anyone have any links/tutorials for making an image have realistic colours but still pop.

Like the image linked below, the colours seem spot on but still stand out. How can this be achieved..?

Looks like they've just whacked up the vibrancy and maybe a bit of saturation. For overcast pics I'll generally tone down the shadows which stops the highlights washing out.
