Yes
Had a little giggle to myself earlier when I found something new on my camera.

For the last couple of weeks I had thought I had damaged my camera as the display at the bottom of my viewfinder was blurred.

Only when cleaning it did I find the slide on the side of it. Had been saying things like, I'm glad I only spent £200 quid on this rather than buying something new. I've knacked it in a couple of months.

If you want to set the viewfinder focus properly, throw a lens cap on and hit the shutter button to bring up the display so you can see the text. Now adjust the slider/wheel until the text is crisp and in focus, otherwise you may think an image is just slightly OOF when in fact it is the viewfinder.

HTH

I'm sure there are still things on several of my cameras that I have yet to discover.

On my last mobile phone, just over a year after I got it and days before I upgraded, I found out pressing the volume slider when it was locked brought up the clock on the display. I use my phones far more as a watch than anything else.

This is my world. :bonk:

On my d40 the text is shown against a black bar so I managed to get it quite sharp again once I realised how stupid I was. Thanks though and will remember the trick as it's bound to be useful at some stage. Either when I Change my camera or get old eyes. I've been impressing myself over the last few weeks at being able to take quite sharp images without having them in focus through the viewfinder. Okay so most of them were down to auto focus but a few were me.

Do you mean the dioptre slide that adjusts the sharpness through the viewfinder??? i.e. if you wear glasses with say +0.75 prescription, you can adjust this slider to it focuses (the viewfinder) to your eyes?

Martin - not sure i follow what you are saying. Surely if you "throw a lenscap" on - all is dark inside the camera and nothing to focus on.....

The recommended way is to remove the lens and point the camera at a window or a bright light source and adjust until the focus points are nice and sharp

Lynton that is exactly what I mean. I didn't know it was there. The other side of the viewfinder has the same notchy lump it just doesn't move. Didn't notice that the notchy lumps were not at the same height.

Put the lens cap on to block out everything but the bars displaying EV, Av/Tv settings etc... that run down the bottom and RHS of the viewfinder.

You are focusing on the text/graphics within the viewfinder or if you hit the AF selection button you can use them too. There is no way the text/AF points in the viewfinder can be OOF so it is the best benchmark for setting it up properly to your eyes.

Hope that makes sense?

I always wondered how to alter this to make sure it was correct, however not sure how especially when you say put lens cap on, surely there is nothing to focus on?

Just the display that's inside the camera. :)

Have to agree with you. With my "old" D40 I have a black bar but on something that doesn't putting the cap on would give you a black background against which to view the text.

Read this its how Canon tell you to do it.

Ah ha got it - knew about setting the dioptre but this way makes it much easier to set it up properly.
