Yes
just saw a wine and coffee thread, My tipple is cask ale and bottled real ale.

what are your favourites and recommendations?

mine change with the seasons, right now i can't get enough Jennings Sneck Lifter.

Heading down to witney at the weekend to visit the Wychwood brewery and all the pubs in the vicinity

Stroud brewery do a mean ale called Budding.

They have a few others too, but Budding really hits the spot. Im not usually an ale man, preferring weissbiers, but I recently ordered a 18 pint box of budding for me and a mate for our Halloween party. Let's just say there wasn't much left at the end of the night.

Budding is good!

Had it at a hotel once in Cheltenham. Was yummy! Not been able to find it again.

I recently went on a tour of the Sambrooks brewery in Battersea, having not had their beer before. It ended up with me finding a new, favourite beer- Wandle. Now being Wandsworth born and having family who worked at Young's I have always been partial to a pint of ordinary but have not really drunk Young's since their move to Bedford.

Wandle is a superb beer (~3.8%) that has all of the good points of ordinary (light, refreshing, hoppy and with a certain aftertaste) but actually was a little nicer in some unexplaiable way. It may have been drinking it about 2 meters from where it was brewed though.

I don't drink very much any more but when I do, beers like that will really make me happy!

(As an aside Sambrooks only supply inside the M25 so unless they are attending an event with some bright beer, non Londoners are out of luck!)

I'm quite a fan of Woodforde's, particually Wherry and Nelsons Revenge.
More so at this time of year a friend of mine is son of the head brewer, or something like that, so I always get cut in on the Christmas box deas that get offered to pubs. :)

Also Brewers Gold is a bit special. Very hard to stop at just 7 or 8 on a warm summers evening!

If you are heading to Witney, I can recomend the Wychwood brewery they do some lovely brews especially this time of year in the local pubs. I can also suggest Hook Norton brewery which is close by as they also do some good beers.

thats the beauty of real ale it can be so local.

The very local ale for me is Leek brewery but its very unrefined and not great. Titanic in stoke however is excellent and I recently tried their plum porter which was a very unique and most excellent ale!

I had a very nice Stout at The Keelman which has the Big Lamp Brewery right next door last time I was up in the NE back in June. It was lovely.

Hoping to go down to Manchester for the Winter Ales Festival in January as well. Have been known to attend Stockport Beer and Cider Festival in the past.

Not really a beer drinker prefer red wine but don't mind it on occassion.

Trust me im very familiar with all wychwood ales, my favourite of which is bountiful

Sounds like my kind of beer. I love the way that strength beer is often referred to as a "session beer" in this country.
My avatar somehow gives away my preference.

The old enemy! ;)

I do agree that a good session beer can't be beat.

Oakhams JHB is a very nice pint, not that unlike Youngs ordinary bitter.

For something slightly different Adnams Oyster is a rather nice tasting stout

had a pint of oakhams on saturday night, was called inferno and was nothing like it sounded. a bit unrefined though, very hoppy, didn't exactly go top of my list.

Joe,

If you ever get the chance - try St Peter's Brewery, based in Suffolk. they have some kind of weird deal with the English Whisky Co... not 15 mins from me, and have a festive ale with peated whisky in it.

It's... um..... different!

I always see London pride as one of my no nonsense beers. It's there with bombadier and directors. You're always guaranteed a decent ale although it won't wow.

Theakstons Old peculiar, Wold Top mars magic, York brewery Centurians Ghost, Cropton Brewery Monkmans slaughter, Blacksheep Riggwelter, Copper Dragon Best, Great Newsome Jems Stout......................

Copper dragon I can enjoy!

St Peters also do fruit beers, my wife went on their brewery tour a few years back

Skinners Cornish Blonde or Keel Over

well any of the Skinners draft goes down well :)

yes they used to do grapefuit and a lemon and ginger... both most quaffable whilst cremating on the BBQ.

I'm heading down to Cornwall next April, looking forward to tasting tribute closer to home, will bare this skinners in mind

Try the HSD which is another from St Austell Brewery, and if your at the Eden project they do a nice drop of Eden ale which is from another local brewery -Sharp's at Rock.

I know doom bar well!

I had another st Austell brew the other week. It wasn't tribute but it had a similar name tri something, was really nice. That Cornish already flavour sits very well on my palate. It's not dissimilar to my home county off Kenya brewer shepherd neame with bishops finger and spitfire

Blue monkey and salopian do some great ales, ok and my local bewdley brewery do a couple of solid contenders too.

Bath Ales Gem these days, used to be Smiles Exhibition before they sold out and closed the brewery on Colston street :(

Many years ago used to enjoy Owd Roger in the Royal Standard of England, don't live anywhere near there now so haven't had a pint in about 20 years. Having grown up near London there were plenty of pubs selling Fullers ales, the IPA was my favourite.

Good ones I remember from festivals : Wickwar Station Porter, Hoskins & Oldfield Old Navigation, Cotleigh Tawny

Now there's a memory revival. Often went to the Royal Standard at Forty Green when I was at Brunel Uni back in the seventies (). Fantastic pint and like you, havent had a pint of it in donkeys :bonk:

If you are only 15mins from the English Whisky Co. you are not a million miles from me..... scary

As for real ale, I am rather partial to a drop (or two!) of Black Sheep, or in the summer, their Holy Gr'ale'.

lots of people enjoying black sheep, can't say its one that impresses me. Am out in town tonight so will see what the local pubs have to offer this week
