I've long been confined to a max of 200mm on FF, which is pretty limiting for motorsport.
I'm in need of a bit of extra reach, and I'm considering the 400mm f5.6 (much as I'd love these fancy 2.8 primes, i cannot stretch to that)
In terms of image quality, Im guessing the above lens is going to be a lot cleaner and sharper than the 100-400mm, or any of the Sigma <500 lenses.
Am i right in thinking this, or should I re-evaluate my shopping list?

Cheers

One or two people have been swapping their 400's for the new 100-400 mk2 for reportedly better IQ. No idea myself as i don't shoot Canon, but could be an option if you have the dosh.

Too late now David, i've done the deal on a 400mm. Still, could be a lot worse though i guess.

How you getting on with it Matty? I use the 400 5.6 and it's been a blinder. The new zooms are good but they don't beat the IQ or focus accuracy of the prime!

I've not used it in anger so far, i took receipt of the 5d3 yesterday, so its gonna be a big switch, moving from 5Dc and 70-200, to 5D3 and 400mm.
Gonna be a lot of practice, and probably a lot of binned shots, but it looks like I should have some good potential for the future. I'll be giving it a test run at Spa in a couple of weeks, so that should be a good baptism of fire

Same setup as me then, the AF should blow you away compared to the classic... Looking forward to seeing your images :)

Cheers man, I need to brush up on some processing too - you polish your shots up so nice, love your flickr work.
Cant wait for an AF boost, I've been taking to MF as a reliable method of late, will be great to put it through its paces!
