I have taken some product pics for a company and need to know what size/resolution is best (or the norm) to put them on a CD for viewing on screen and/or putting on a website for subsequent viewing.

any help most appreciated

Resolution is only important if you will print it .
The size in pixels is whats important, and will depend on what screen size you will optimize them for. Also take into account the borders and menu bars of the browser if you will publish online.
Today people sit on very different monitor sizes. But rather safe to assume is that most monitors today are at least 1024x760.

I agree with Pelle. it's all relative. depends upon how the website is set up and people's monitors etc.

web images are normally around 600 pixels or so.

there is no normal though. Some companies will want them 1200pixels or so for magnified viewing
if you go on their current website you should see their current images and be able to view the properties of their images through a decent browser.
however, if you make them 600pixels and they want them 400px..then for maximum quality I would resize them from scratch again. just a personal preference but it makes for better quality I think as the process has more information to work from.

Most images for web are 72ppi, you don't really need any higher.

Makes no difference - try it yourself. Resize an image to say 600 x 400 pixels @1ppi and at 1000ppi - They will both be the same size and quality on your screen or website.
All the ppi figure does is tell a printer device the actual physical size to print the image on paper in pixels per inch.

72 dpi would be the norm, although as others have said it is the total pixel count that should matters... I would er on the side of caution and check with whoever manages their website though as it wouldn't be unheard of for them to have some temperamental automated process in place which requires a specific resolution....
