If I want to re-size an image in Elements 3 what is the best way to go about it? I have an image that I want to print at 15"x10" (it's an image that won't go exactly to that size) but I am not sure what boxes to change within the re-size image box. Also, are there any other boxes in there that should/should not be ticked?

Thanks

Colin.

I'm sure if you use the crop tool you can get some standard sizes come up or is that just Photoshop?...anyway, if you want to print an image then the best thing to learn is to set it to round about 300dpi, this might considerably shrink your image unless you have saved it with really big dimentions in the first place.

How big is the original, and what resolution, dpi etc?

If you're printing at home, you could always let the printer take care of the scaling. If it's off to a lab then I think the same applies. As long as the resolution is above 200ish dpi at 15X10 then it should be ok.

If you want to interpolate it up to 15x10 then you should use the image size dialogue, and bicubic smoother, then just tick the resample box and type in the dimensions and dpi you want. HTH?

Thanks for the replies but I'm having a blond moment as I haven't a clue what you're talking about!!

Here is a sample image:

Obviously when I untick the 'constrain proportions' box I can set the image to 15" x 10", but I have no idea whether to re-sample the image or not, if I tick (or untick) the box, does it affect image/print quality? The reason I'm asking is that a family member has requested a couple of prints at this exact size with the border and edge as you see.

I'm confusing myself now. :bonk:

I'm no photochopper but I'll tell you what i would do :)

Your picture has more or less enough pixels in it for gandhis suggested 200 per inch minimum for printing so i would leave the size alone.

Then it needs cropping in the right proportions for printing. For that I would use a simple free program called jpegcrops (google it). It crops in your proportions then saves the bit you want without recompressing so it is lossless. Then upload it to a printing place and let them get on with it :)

Now someone will be along and tell you how it should be done ;)

Hacker, File/Page Setup make sure the page orientation is right, then
File/Print and use the percent box to change the size the image will be printed at.

See if that does the trick for you, if it works well you have the advantage of not having made any actual changes to the image itself.

From looking at that, I'd tick the constrain proportions box, untick the resample box and then enter the longest side dimensions into the box for width, so obviously 15 inches. See what that does to the resolution? With a jpeg out of the d70 I get a ppi of about 200 at 15X10, which should be fine for printing.

If you do want to resample (which basically increases the pixel dimensions by adding in new ones) up to 300 ppi then make sure the option used is bicubic smoother as this is designed for up-rezing.

It's a bit confusing I know, had me for months this one, but when you get head round it it'll all become clear!

I must admit it took me ages to get my brain around dpi for printing and the dpi I actually had in my image...I just kept reading articles until finally it dawned on me what they were on about...oh and I AM blonde!!
This article might help you a bit with your problem .... good luck!!
