Re enactments

Can't help with Roman events, Daryl but your question made me think of the events at Kentwell Hall in Suffolk.

I have been a couple of times and it is a great experience and Kentwell Hall is a great house.

I don't know about Roman, but can help with ECW if needed. Have you looked on the website if the Ermine Street Guard?

Not something I've seen a lot of in recent years. I suspect that much like Napoleonic, somewhere in mainland Europe is where its all moved to...

Daryl, I think the biggest Roman do is at Chester - people come from all over for that - not sure of the date - they have a mock up fort on the racetrack and stuff. I suppose a phone call to someone might shed a bit more light on it for you

Daryl,

The Chester Roman festival has been postponed and won't take place until 2014. A pity really as it's set around the amphiteatre.

There's nothing else that's big in any sense. The race course do a Roman themed day but it's only a small element of Roman-ness with chariot races and a few gladiators - mainly a kids day.

Shame - a beer would have been in order.

Blenhaim palace 25th that's the biggest civil war re-anacment in the uk over 1000 people participate its over 3 days bank holiday weekend

There's also Military Odyssey in Kent - usually August Bank Holiday.

Everybody from Ancient Greeks onwards. Traditionally it rains a lot.

a bit late to let anyone know the Sealed Knot Society civil war re-enacters are in town (Rotherham) this Sat-Sun and the local famous chapel will be open Rotherham chapel on the bridge built 1483 alleged Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here

SEALED Knot civil war re-enacters will fight the Battle of Rotherham Bridge all over again as part of the town’s first history festival.

The battle, first fought in 1643 when the Parliamentary Roundheads backed by the town were attacked by Royalist troops, will be recreated twice in Clifton Park on Saturday, May 11, and Sunday May 12.

The Sealed Knot will perform a pike-and-musket drill in All Saints’ Square on the Saturday at both 11.30am and 1pm before marching to the park for the battle at 2pm. The battle will be re-enacted on the Sunday at 2pm.

The festival — organised by the Rotherham Heritage Educatio Group, also marks Rotherham’s role in the Wars of the Roses and kicks off on Friday with a Latin Mass at Rotherham Minster at 7.15pm.

If anyone does go to Blenheim, I will be riding in the Parliamentarian cavalry during the battle, and in the pre-battle riding display - it is very frustrating as I am always too busy participating to make much use if the camera! Do come and say hello if you happen to catch the cavalry.

theres usually a re enactment at bancroft roman villa , milton keynes each year - its not that big, but the reenactors are accessible and happy to pose - check the parks trusts website for dates

If you're ever up in the Midlands keep an eye out for the grand bizarre at Rufford Abbey, it's an odd place to be as they have everything on from Romans to world war 2 and seeing a redcoat chatting to a someone looking like Genghis Khan is just funny.

One not to miss is chalke valley end of June...serious multi period history with some heavy weight historians on hand giving talks.

Good for photography and military history buffs.

Its near Salsbury
