Re-charging old Laptops

We have 3 old laptops and various power adapters but we cannot seem to get the laptops to power up. (tried a few in all of them)

Is it possible that they cannot now be powered after a few years of inactivity and we would need new batteries to make them work again or is it a case of finding the correct power lead!

We were wanting to give the laptops to a local community project but obviously we can't if they won't be able to use them.

Any pointers on what I need to do - I can post the makes if it makes difference.
 
Most lithium batteries once they are completely drained past their "safe point" they will need to be replaced and will not charge

The laptop should power up without the battery connected and the power lead attached which then proves the laptop works and the battery is dead.

So I need to take the batteries out then?
 
Some laptops, if not all, need residual power in the battery to start even when plugged into the mains. Try getting a new battery for one and see how you get on.

kind of defeats the object.........it is supposed to be a cost free project!
 
They should turn on plugged in with or without a battery. What make and model are they?
 
Don't know if this will work on a laptop battery but I had a raft of cordless drill batteries in various stages of knackeredness and was advised to try sticking them in the freezer for 48 hours. Out of about eight, I got two charging and holding a charge again like new and I'm still using them today.
Might be worth a try

Sorry but you do not need a battery to run a laptop on mains, in fact if you are running a laptop on mains most of the time Its best to remove the battery, it will do it more harm if left in.

on some models you do, ive seen it before. and like i say macbooks wont power on even on mains if the battery is totally flat.

Let me know the EXACT model of the Acer and if there is a battery model. I have a broken Amilo pro in my parts bin with a decent battery if you cover the postage.

Im running an Acer laptop as I type without a battery installed, Ive never had batteries in any of my laptops ( on 3rd now ) except when using away from a mains source.
