Im looking to shoot in RAW - but my laptop wont open or recognise RAW files

what do you guys use to open this type of file??

:Les

What software do you have? You'll either need to update the Adobe Codec if you are using photoshop, or install the programs that came with your camera.

Thank you- just realised I have a data converter programme that came with the new Sony (Image data convertor SR 3)

I'll install that as see how I get on- looks like it will only open RAW files-

I have installed the software,Its a RAW file convertor- that came with the Camera ( I didnt see the CD when I unpacked the equipment :bonk:)- I can now open, edit and send RAW files to PSE 9

As previously, my sd card showed no images when I inserted it into my Laptop , if I shoot in RAW- If that makes any sense?

I have the updates installed- but thank you for the link

Les :D

ps I'll be shooting RAW from here on in

raw is heavy but that the way to go for post processing!
To look at pictures quickly i like to use picasa, they are loading very fast using this app!

I have spent many thousands of hours playing with JPG files and converted to shoot RAW a couple years ago and you can push the RAW files so much more. I can't use RAW files from my E-PL2 yet as PS9 and LR3 have not updated the ACR to accept the E-PL2 but it won't be long. Mind you the JPG's from the E-PL2 are so good i don't have to push them much anyway :)

You should have been able to see the RAW files on your memory cards even if you had no software to view them. Even in computers which don't have any photo editing software I can see the RAW files on a memory card, so I don't know why you couldn't.

I'd compare the Sony and Adobe software to see which is best. The benefit of the Sony software is that any picture styles and in camera settings will be read correctly. The benefit of the Adobe software is that there will be more help/tutorials on how to use it. You have the option to use both though as you have both installed on your computer.

Why are pictures taken in RAW of better quality? Is it because your computer does a better job at converting them to JPEG?

Or is it you just have the benefit of being un-compressed and therefore can convert them to whatever ?

It's not so much that you can convert them as being able to bring out lots more subtlety in shades, lightening etc.

Have a read here for a general intro.

Pretty sure there is an update now

You are welcome; once people start to shoot raw, they rarely go back.

Indeed, except for the fact that if you have a 5D II, the RAW files that it produces are monster sized - between 25 and 35 MB each  Make sure you have plenty of storage space!

TBH I would consider Lightroom before upgrading from Elements to CS5 - be cheaper and between LR and Elements you will have most of what you need.
