hi there, i'm struggling with this RAW file lark, i'm relatively new to photography so be prepared ,i've now entered the DSLR world.. could somebody please give me some pointers .. ie.. where would be the best place to look online for a free RAW file editing site as i'm not sure if i want to go and spend x amount on Photoshop or similar until i have some knowledge .. please excuse my ignorance ....:bang:

What camera do you have? RAW software is often included on the CD with the camera.

A google with 'X Raw Software Freeware' (where X is your camera Name/Model) should yield some results.

I've tried the lot with my Canon and return to Photoshop time and time again - it might be worth the investment, you can often pick up slightly out of date versions much cheaper than the current ones?

Cheers
James

oops.. camera is Pentax K100D

And no RAW software on the CD? Rawshooter is well worth a look - if it gives you an insight into whether RAW is for you, it's worth the time spent in learning how to use it!

Opinion on RAW is divided. Most pros and serious amateurs shoot RAW, but there are those who believe a good quality, full size, low compression JPEG gets the job done just as well, as long as the shot was good in the first place!

Cheers,
James

which photoshop would you suggest..regards Sean..

photoshop 7 mate.. imho raw shooter essentials is great i use that too..
nice lid by the way .

Not sure if photoshop 7 will handle newer RAW files though. Raw shooters essentials is probably as good as you'll get.

Failing that paint shop pro (10 or 11) will probably cover you and is a LOT cheaper than Photoshop. In some ways it's a lot better too.

If you're using RAW for motocross you'd better start getting a lot of cards ;)

I have also just started using PhotoPlus 11 and works very similar to CS2 (without the refinements and price tag)

:p
